Does anyone use this pile of crap?

I want to install it so I can play Left 4 Dead. As soon as I install it, it wants to update itself, whereby it gets a random percentage through, then just goes back to 0% and starts again ...it just does this continuously. Neutral

Anyone else encountered this?

I've tried that sort of stuff. Killed it, removed it completely and reinstalled again. Done reboots etc. Everything that would make sense.

But after I initially install steam, it immediately tries to update and just repeatedly fails.

Annoying as hell. All I want to do is play the damn game I bought! No wonder people just pirate games. It seems far easier.

can you disable updates?

as far as im aware you only need to contact steam once then you can play in offline mode

also, try updating steam first if it is lfd that is trying to update itself.

perhaps see if you can download steam by itself.

once you enter a key you can get steam to download the game anyway.

The problem is I am installing steam itself. I run the msi, it installs, but then immediately tries to update itself ...and fails.

I don't appear to be able to get to anything to disable updates. Everytime steam is run it tries to update. The msi seems to only install some minimal stuff then tries to download the rest.

It would be ideal if I could just source a copy of the latest full install of the steam program that doesn't have to try and update itself. Then maybe I'll actually be able to run it and install the game I have bought.

Ive got a fairly recent game with it on it. you can borrow that if you want.

also, perhaps try to turn off the network connection just after its installed i presume you have it isntalled before it tries to update itself?

otherwise try to find the download cache and delete that?

It's part of the install process it seems. Install then try and update.

I am fairly certain I tried installing with my network cable unplugged. I might try that again this evening ...heh, I may have left my wireless enabled.

Steam install coming off physical media or download?

gamer guys i know just said they've seen that before, and it finishes eventually, so maybe just let it run for a while?

Both.

I have Left 4 Dead on physical media. Steam install on that kept failing. So I downloaded the msi from Steam. That keeps failing as well.

Bloody annoying. I assume it's timing out the connection to wherever it's updating from, then starts all over again. Dunno why they can't just have an ftp site that has the full steam program on it so I can just grab the latest full install.

I'll leave it running overnight tonight and see if it finally installs properly.

Huzzah! On about the 5th or 6th attempt this evening it finally managed to get the update so it will run.

Steam is awesome.

I had that issue but like kris_b recommended, I just left it thinking it was a glitch in the updater.

After about 15 minutes it worked.

I can see how this would frustrate anyone who didn't want to wait to play a game they'd just bought.

You won't get that error again though, it only happens once.

If you're with Orcon expect ridiculously fast downloads of games / trailers / demos etc.
