Ok..hrmm.
Can someone please explain to me.. why the big fuss about the State of Origin game. It is 2 Australia teams playing against each other.. so what??
I've had guys in my life who take it to extremes like wearing the jerseys getting shit fucked up on a week night .. for what? Queensland ALWAYS win.. what's the point I really just do not get the point. Shouldn't the other team try and get better players or something since they don't win?

I probably sound like a douche.. I mean I love sports.. I love watching basketball and boxing.. but something like that seems kinda dumb.

Actually that WAS my answer, I thought it was fairly obvious but let me spell it out for you. What some people may like to watch may seem pointless and dumb (as you phrased it) to other people.

Ok I see. So this is probably semi annoying and offensive then.

Sorry.

Haha, not really. I'm not exactly a mega fan.. but I get that some people get entertainment out of stuff I dont
[quote]
Heh, it's hard to say why some kiwis get so worked up in the passion of it. I can say though that as a rugby league fan, it is the highest spectacle of the sport. So if you enjoy the game, then you have to watch it and it's only natural to pick a side to back.

Me personally, I spent a bit of time in Queensland as a kid and got into the sport and Origin hugely then. So I have formed an attachment to the Maroons. :>

You would get awesome girlfriend points if you did watch it with your bf just quietly. Wink

It's only recently that Queensland have dominated, prior to that it was the closest competition in sporting history. At one point it was so even after nearly 30 years that the difference in total points scored between the two teams was like 2. Just 2 points in 30 years of playing. That's crazy close!

Those crazy people who get drunk on a week night! How do they live with themselves!?

I haven't watched a match in about 10 years. I don't find watching sport very entertaining, unless it's of guys jumping off mountains, out of planes or climbing rock etc.

I just don't understand why so many Kiwis back home support QLD -a lot of QLDers that I've met are racist rednecks who barely accept kiwis and openly despise maoris. I can't tar everyone with the same brush but thats been my impression over the years.

Or because when they started watching it, it doesn't matter when as it's applicable anytime, the NSW team were a bunch of dicks? :>

Let's face it they're 2 Australian teams, both have had more than their fair share of dicks.

But yes I have also had similar experiences - without question the most openly racist individuals I have met have been from Queensland.

lol... It was only 6 years ago or something that people were saying Origin is dead because NSW won a bunch of series in a row Razz SoO has historically been one of the closest rivalries ever. I remember watching it circa 2005 and at the time throughout the entire history of SoO they were equal in games won, equal in series won, and they only differed in total points scored by like less than 30.

Couldn't agree more QTRARO, and I've argued about it several times on these very boards in the Sports forum!

It is a distinctly Austrlalian contest, that has ZERO context to NZ history or culture, sporting or otherwise.

All good to get behind a side and support one of them, especially if you have a family or historical link (eg. lived in NSW as a child or whatever). But many Kiwis should be ashamed at the "passion" they throw behind this Aussie contest!

And yeah this, QLD sounds like a racist shithole for the most part.
[quote]
In fairness, that sentiment applies to a large part of Australia as a whole, not just QLD.

Just because we haven't heard of racial bullshit in Cabramatta recently doesn't mean whitey doesn't still hate on "fuckin yellow monkeys".

ALL sports teams from any country have ZERO relevance/connection to 99% of us personally, it's all arbitrary Razz

State of Origin is intrinsically and fundamentally rooted in Aussie parochialism.

Supporting teams for arbitrary reasons is fine and pretty much commonplace in NZ as we are disconnected from most of the world's major sporting competitions... but the fact that some Kiwis show more support for these Aussie teams than they do, say, the All Blacks, is a disgrace!

[quote]
We have a historical interest in Origin simply because of our interest in league prior to the Warriors. Sure, there may not have been Kiwis playing in it, but we all would have formed a reason to support either team based on who we supported through the 80s etc.

Seems pretty obvious to me Confused

And people may show more passion for SoO than the ABs because they think rugby is fkn lame; there's no fkn way those same people show more passion for the Blues/Maroons than the Kiwis...

[quote]
I get and i'm only vaguely interested in sport. Presumably Q and NSW between them contain most or a significant number of the best league players in the world, so any competition that draws from players in that pool, cuts it in two, and then sets them against each other is going to be of major interest to anyone that's into league. Bit of a no-brainer really.

Not arguing whatsoever that State Of Origin isn't popular because it is the pinnacle of the sport. That's absolutely right

There definitely was not ever a Kiwi to ever play State Of Origin. Except for fake Kiwis like Tonie Carroll I get your other points as to why people choose their side though. That's fine.

I just think that to blindly, passionately, unreasonably buy into State against State/Mate against Mate as a Kiwi... is just wrong

I'm here in NSW now and gotta say, it's an awesome atmosphere. The Aussies really get behind it and its unmissable Smile

Hit the nail on the head there buddy. I struggle to feel much passion for the All Blacks, the best I muster is a "Oh that's nice" if they win or when they won the world cup is was a "Phew!" It's not because of patriotism, it's because rugby is fuckin lame and boring. I get far more excited when Qld win the SoO but if the Kiwis or the Warriors win? It's not even comparable.

Great example of that was last year with Kris B, Jono and Gummi at my house, we watched the AB's V France game and we were mildly interested, but the Melbourne/Warriors game woaaaa. You could cut the tension in the room with a knife, we were that excited.
[quote]
What about the AB Argentina game or the AB Australia game?
The RWC final was one of the worst games of rugby ever.

No one else sees the irony in being accused of being unpatriotic for enjoying SoO over rugby by someone who left NZ for Australia?

I concede your point re: supporting Kiwis over All Blacks (though your comparison is hardly fair. I'm a big ABs fan too but that was a shit QF whereas the Warriors vs Storm game was one of the best and most important Warriors games in history).

You're trying to tell me that abandoning your homeland is more patriotic than supporting a professional sports team from another country?

The excitement was even before the game began Grind. We were all looking forward to watching the Warriors play well before any of the games had even started. THAT'S the point I'm making.

Same here bro... what a day, what a game.

Guess what I'm saying, is have you ever felt that same feeling before a SoO game?

Not nearly to the same degree which is what I mentioned but I have been quite excited about Origin games for sure, I was excited about the last game even more than I've ever felt about any All Blacks game but I also said was that I get far more hyped for the Warriors or the Kiwis by a long way.

That's because they so rarely get to witness the bash, they're generally more the target.

There's actually a very strong Lebanese fanbase for the Canterbury Bulldogs (Thanks to Hazem El Masri) so that would be incorrect. :>
