"What is apparent is that the Cube is a highly advanced communications device that responds positively to the presence of humans and interacts accordingly.

By acting as a central hub it seems to allow us to direct our thoughts, collect and share ideas, transcend language and interconnect musically in ways previously not possible. We’re still in the early stages of research but it seems our destinies have somehow become interlinked.

The global Contakt events are the next phase of our research. The Cube’s technology will strengthen the connection between the performers but it will to go further, bringing together the people who share and support our music, giving them the chance to interact personally with the Cube and in doing so, gain access to the Cube Network.

That’s why we’re holding these events, to create a unique, interactive environment that offers a new, closer form of communication. After
all that’s what makes us human... and if technology can increase that, we should embrace it.“

Irony huh?!? Hawtin has all of a sudden done a massive landslide into plot lossage. His Traktor set loop-to-noise-drop-bass-high-five-everyone-for-10minutes-and-jump around-like-a-trance-dj-sets are becoming annoying.

Keeping in theme though...

Yeah, seems a shame..

Around the time of consumed / Dex efx&909 dude was mindblowing - I'd be hard pressed to think of any set or piece of music from him in the past few years that have acheived the same thing for me.

Then again I am much more cynical now Smile

i dont know if its a joke or not. looks stupid.
aside from the radio show i havent been involved much woth music for the last few months so i dont know whats up. it looks to me like minus has fallen victem to itself!

did any of you guys hear that RA100 podcast? actually i think its pretty cool. its definitely not as boring as the picture review would suggest..
but yeah, that whole campaign looks so pretentious!!!
i like to think gaiser got roped into it... he's not posing as enthusiastically as the others...
[quote]
from what i can tell, their sets at DEMF will be the first with this new cube gadget. I'll throw something their way if they try pull off this uber cool bullshit and don't let loose.

found the RA podcast a little underwhelming. Too samey after a while. Not enough jackin'.....

I sort of admire Richie for trying to push the technology boundaries. But fuck mate, go write computer programs to help the world in some way and just stick to playing records because, from the dance floor, people can't tell and don't care what the fuck you're doing differently.

Saying that will be interesting to see if it makes the music sound better. Will report back from DEMF. ciao
[quote]
Er, but it sounds like he's just using a mixer to sub-mix everyone else?

Maybe even sending timecode to sync? Oh... cutting edge.

I don't actually even see the 'technology' aspect of it being that new...

Where is the continuation of his live audio and video project? That looked like it could actually push boundaries.
[quote]
yeah from what i can tell theres very little boundry pushing going on at all. its all repackaging. i think more effort has gone into marketing. and scoring k..
the cube looks kinda cool and all and they have made it so it has no ugly bottom that shows screws and leads. and at least they have a nice big dice to play drinking games and craps with.

however, in saying all of that it is still a show i would love to see.

Personally, I would like to see all that shit stripped back and two turntables/flux capacitor in a dingy little club with an absurdly overspec'ed PA.

But im sure you wont move as many units that way.

but is it really supposed to be 'cutting edge'? he's not using the cube thing for the mix is he? isnt it just a plain old promo mix for RA? and while he is submixing everyone else, well, wasnt that what transitions and de9 were? ... not really building to anything huge, just keeping on the groove...different strokes for different folks though i guess. Smile

Well, yeah. Just watch his endorsement video for Traktor Scratch. Now he is able to take DJ to places he never could before. And where exactly would that be? I think the phrase he uses is actually bleeding edge...
[quote]
His traktor scratch sets are horrible compared to a year ago when he was on serato etc. He doesnt take the dj set anywhere else. He just ruins any kind of flow. Its not like he seems to be doing anything massively cutting edge with it either. Amazing as I thought he would be using the timecode record control but wasnt at fabric, yet he seems to be doing less cool stuff/inventive mixing than he was when he was messing around with turntables. I'm giving him another go next month at a festival to see if he has come to terms with it(his new set up) and stops going as nuts on echos, delays, looping (in particular) and perhaps he need to lay off the coke to. His nose seems constantly blocked now.
[quote]
to much coke certainly would explain that stupid monkey suite he is wearing.. he looks like a corporate puppet in those photos.

Lets just see if those less profitable or experimental projects actually exist.

Last night at the Minus afterparty in Detroit at St. Andrews Hall, Beatportal spotted Richie Hawtin hanging out by the bar.

So we grabbed the famous techno DJ and asked him about the mysterious Cube, which he and Minus crew are promoting as a new club concept.

Here’s what Richie Hawtin had to say about The Cube.

Richie Hawtin at St. Andrews, Detroit

What is The Cube?

“It’s an interactive cube structure covered by LEDs that recognizes people who’ve signed up for Contakt membership.

“If you join Contakt as a member you get a special card which is embedded with a microchip.

“The Cube can detect when a member is in the club.

“It also broadcasts messages via bluetooth and LAN.

“So when you come to a Contakt event, anyone who has their bluetooth turned on will receive a message.

“Anyone who has LAN connectivity on their mobile will also receive a message.

When Richie Hawtin played, The Cube changed colour

“Sometimes that message might contain a picture, or music.”

How do you and the rest of the Minus artists interact with The Cube?

“From the DJ booth or stage, we can trigger The Cube into various states.

“Usually it’s blue and white, but I can make it turn red or green when I play.

“We can control its intensity and more.”

Who built The Cube?

“A team of about six of us built it. I came up with the idea, and then we worked with lighting experts and technicians to build it.”

Phenomenal.

Supported by Emerson Todd no less! That's going to be kinda weird...
[quote]
I can't believe how shit that cube thing sounds. They may as well have just stuck a mobile phone in the middle of the dance floor. When I go to the london gig I'm gonna smash the cube into Hawtins face, thus destroying it and maybe making hawtin realise he is being a diddle. I think he needs to move away from Berlin and give himself some distance from the 'scene'. Some place where he doesn't have people following him round all the time blowing hot air up his arse.
[quote]
wow! this thread is still going....
[quote]
yeah I reckon Emerson will be the highlight, think Antix are in town too..

cut the crap and just make us another 'spastik' or 'alpha wave'.

'spastik' is like the 'smells like teen spirit' or 'paradise city' of techno.

Well, that's the thing. Its almost like Sven has taken the Star Wars Chic concept, but camped it up to take the piss out of itself.

They cant be serious though?
