Had to re-install Win7 as the RC was to expire in a couple of days, so figured may as well try a new SSD drive to install on since I have to fass about re-installing stuff anyway.

Got this one: http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=461234

DAMN this thing is quick :> Boot-up takes mere seconds, installing anything is lightning, opening applications etc...
good times Smile

ty to Adamal for the idea and for picking it up and installing it :>

I've been keeping an eye on these lately. Would love to get one but cant quite justify it, especially as i would probably need a reasonably large(read: expensive) one (or dual) for use on either my work laptop or home desktop.

Also of note is 2tb drives are now under $200.

Mmmmm define "large" though. I'd want 128gb myself. In a desktop, if you want capacity+speed, I still think 10krpm Velociraptor drives in RAID0 is the way, but only *just* for now.

Or, SDD OS drive and bulk cheap disk.

Edit: FYI, data recovery tools DO NOT work on SSD's. Going to make future computer forensics very hard indeed.

But they crash/die less too right? Making data recovery less necessary...
And since it's just an OS/app drive, I'm not really storing anything valuable anyway that isn't backed up..

I really want some for our Thumper.

Kris: yeah 128 is the minimum for me and theyre still pretty expensive. I could justify 64 in terms of price but i think ill wait for the sizes to pick up a bit.

Pechora: Some people delete the data by accident or by viruses but not everyone wants their data recovered - forensics often involves criminal investigation/activity.

doesn't account for human error/accidental deletions/malicious software.

Hmmm... Is there a way to point users folder to a different drive from windows/programs? In the past I've not bothered with documents folders because all the software that treats it as a dumping ground, recently I changed tack because it's a bit painful when moving something between desktop and documents/storage, but I reckon it would make a whole lot of sense to be able to boot from one drive but user spaces on another drive (if you have lots of drives like I do). Plus you could get a relatively smallish SSD for the OS and not experience slowdown... I think... Maybe point app data to the OS drive too.

Bob: Then that's just another feature for the end user right? Razz
Much safer for all your criminal activities!

yeah you can move special folders to other partitions easy as - right click properties ~ move folder

pechora: no argument but like kris said it will make forensics hard. besides the people who lose data arent usually as resourceful as people who want to hide it.

Even easier in 7:

Yes, you can add network locations too, assuming those locations are on a Windows Search indexed drive.
