OK so I am currently walking 70km and I've just started running 10km a week. Last night my legs were a little weak and the muscles were jumping a bit, so I decided to have a hot hot bath.

The upshot? My legs felt really sore and weak afterwards and I woke up at 4am with cramp, so I can do my scheduled program for today.

What is the science behind this?? Surely a hot bath should have been good for me, not made things worse???

I don't know the science behind it, but don't you often see the top athletes have ice baths afterwards? So maybe a hot bath isn't so good?

Hot water will just increase inflammation and circulation of lactic acid etc.

quote:
Cryotherapy ("cold therapy"Wink constricts blood vessels and decreases metabolic activity, which reduces swelling and tissue breakdown. Once the skin is no longer in contact with the cold source, the underlying tissues warm up, causing a return of faster blood flow, which helps return the byproducts of cellular breakdown to the lymph system for efficient recycling by the body. "Ice baths don't only suppress inflammation, but help to flush harmful metabolic debris out of your muscles," says David Terry, M.D., an ultrarunner who has finished both the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run and the Wasatch Front 100-Mile Endurance Run 10 consecutive times

10km runs? wtf fish_boy seriously. You are doing yourself zero favours pounding the pavement mate. That goes for you too supermuff. You guys are gonna hate your selfs when you hit 55..... get in the pool already and give your body a break, its just so unneccesary

Man I managed to come across as a high n mighty SOB there, awesome Very Happy

But yeah..whatever. you guys wanna run...run. But know you are jarring the fk outta a body that aint getting any younger. Im only sounding off cos I believe that my personal back issues are a result of running aroung on the touch field too long. You combine pounding th pavement with the odd hard weekend and it doesnt take a genius to work out the effect

no no - I am starting at a tad over 3km, three times a week. I'll up that to four times a week in about three - four weeks then a month after that I'll push it up to 5km three times a week. once I can do 5km, four days a week plus the walking, and if i can stay uninjured, then I am ready to do half marathon training again!!!!

I don't run fuck all tbh - it's just one of the many different exercises I do. For me the key is variation. I do a lot of sport with high impact and try to keep some low impact stuff in there too. Here's a list of the exercises that I would have done in the last 3 months:

Running
Swimming
Cycling
Plyometrics
Weights
Misc resistance (pullups, lunges conditioning etc)
Yoga
Stretching workouts
Kenpo/Martial Arts cardio thing
Core workouts
Indoor cricket
Outdoor cricket
Touch
Squash
Tennis

I was doing 2 12km runs and 2 6 km runs a week over much of summer. Have cut that down to 3 6km runs now as football & football training is taking up time. And have never had an injury from running. I don't think everyone that runs lots ends up all injured when they get older ...I have however hurt my knees playing too much touch on rock hard grounds though.

Fuck off.

As for you fishy, drink more fluid. Getting craps after hot bath indicates to me you're dehadrated.

Judging from that aggro response Im gonna assume you misunderstood the reference Razz

Your a logical guy harv, surely you can see how slamming your feet into the hard ground tens of thousands of times a week must be bad of the body. But true what vadz said so maybe it is fine for you....your like a whippet. 100% sinew Very Happy
