I'm after a soft synth which can do basslines in the broad kind of Juno 106 sound. The sort of deep, old-school house sound as in the sample here: Bassline sample

Any suggestions?

Hi Rob.

Pretty much the "broad kind of Juno 106 sound" is something every modern synth can do (broadly true unless you are someone who enjoys playing "spot the source of the sine wave" and are able to pick up the subtle differences). That sample you gave is easily found in pretty much any synth preset list, although it is most genuinely achieved by analog or virtual analog means other than by "playback" on rompler synths (romplers have their own benefits). As you are looking for a softsynth it obviously isnt the analog oscillators that are your main concern. The thing with the Juno series is its really old, and does not have nearly as much modulation available as anything in the recent era, particularly modern digital virtual analog synths of course. In fact maybe it is the limited palette of the old analog synths that makes them so iconic and easy to recognize. The LFO rate is also zzzzzzzz (well to be honest pretty much any brand LFO is zzzzzzzz compared to Waldorf synths... Razz).

At the risk of being shot for plugging (because i sell it), even when i consider it helping, if the simplicity is what attracts you to the Juno, then you might consider the Korg Analog Edition '08 software pack which gives you the soft versions of Korgs MS-20, Polysix and MonoPoly synths for $299. I find myself using the MonoPoly quite regularly alongside my usual outboard synths - and the MS-20 has its obvious screachy and rude charms, although it is more advanced than the original as they have given it more features like a good modulation matrix and up to 32 voices unlike the original analog unit which was a pure monosynth.

RIghto.

Hi Rob,

You forgot to mention your platform. Righto is right. The sound you are after can be easy done on most of soft synths.

Check out TAL Plugins I think you will find something what suits you.

Cheers,
Vitaly.

Cheers for the posts guys.

I'm on Ableton fyi.

I've been through every single presets on Albino 2 and a couple of other synths and have yet to find anything which sounds remotely like that sample I posted.

I'm not an expert in synths but is it possible someone has created a set of pre-sets as useful starting points for something like Albino? The ones it came with and the extra bundle I've added are mostly pretty much meh to me.

I guess what I'm after is a set of presets (for Albino or suggested others) which mimic that older synth sound. The limitation of it slug mentioned don't really mean much to me - I prefer simple/straight-forward stuff usually.

Cheers for any pointers.

Slug. Ok.. this might be more specific and easy to advise on.

That sample I posted - how would I recreate that exact sound? I don't care if it's a soft synth/rompler or whatever - as long as it is software (and preferably free Cool)

Try Nexus (once again) it kicks ass, and people keep releasing expansion packs all the time.
Also you could try Rob Papen Predator, it has a nice mix of old and new, and the filters which can be used as an insert also are really nice.
Slug, I have the MS-20 and I love it. I use it on just about every tune I do (even just for the insert filters!)
