So who is getting the new iPhone then?

Ultimately mate it's just an ideology thing - I don't like Apple and their pompous brand ethic, and I much prefer to explore other options than line their pockets. I get frustrated, in particular, with the iPhone because even though it is a cool device it's become the default for every Tom, Dick and Jane - so much so that there are news items and character surveys on the 'types' of people that buy these products.

I find it tiresome, overhyped and a little ridiculous. And now, as I said in the last post, thankfully there are some genuine, robust alternatives to their giant game of soggy biscuit.

I think its more to do with the patents Palm had than with the actual business value. HP should be able to do some decent stuff with that IP and make others pay for using similar technology.

I don't disagree with the hype thing either. The example I used recently was the story about Foxconn factory workers in China killing themselves. That story wouldn't have got ANYWHERE near the mainstream media if it weren't for the fact that Foxconn happens to build iPhones. They also build stuff for HP, Dell, Intel, and a dozen other global corporates, but *that* doesn't make the news. Nor do fuck all of China's umpteen other workers rights tragedies, only the one where iPhones are involved. Christ, it's bigger news than 5 year olds making Nikes.

But surely you have to see that mainly, you're writing off iPhone for ideological reasons more than anything else. I'm writing off Android (for now) because I tried a few devices and found it severely lacking in several metrics.

Yeah, WebOS and the PILE of patents Palm has. I vaguely recall an issue a while back actually where Apple was getting ansty about something to do with Palm infringing on some of their IP, and Palm's response was along the lines of "go on, try it on" while gesturing at their massive stack of IP, the insinuation being that they had plenty they could counter-claim with.

Of course I see that - I have never once said that it's a shit phone.

First iPhone I've ever had though (actually, first phone I've purchased for myself in years) so does that make me a virgin sheep? Hot.

Flattie has his, it is quite allot more refined. Like the extra robust feel, but I think the squareness of it will take a bit of getting used to, also evidently none of the desktop cradles for the 3G/S will fit.

onscreen keypad keys for phone are noticeably smaller

The queues for it today in Sydney were stupid! Three large events for customers being wooed by VHA, Optus and Telstra.
