I walk to the gym now, and walk home and the trip is about 10 minutes each way.

I'm pushing myself a bit harder now, especially as I have a lot of free time, - it's great, but I sort of wish I could get some sort of refuel really really quickly, not about 15-20 minutes after my last exercise.

Anyway, toying with ideas for a container to pack with me, I finally thought: "Hey why don't I just put 1 scoop of protein powder in my water bottle?" That way I'm constantly getting sips of protein as I work out!!

....or is this a stupid idea?
[quote]
Not stupid. You'll see the really hard out guys at the gym always have a recovery/workout solution whilst they work out.

I would imagine someone like Damien or possibly Pulla if he ever comes in here would be good people to comment on it.

I was going to ask a similar question today too- if you don't mind, I'll just drop it in here?

A)What is a good supplement to take if you are doing alot of Cardio and occasional sports game- no real weight program/no gym action?
B)Is there any point?

I used to have a shaker in the car/gym bag with powder in it, and I'd fill it up with water right after my work out and smash it within a few minutes of finishing my work out, or I would just grab a protein shake at the gym when I am done.

as for during.. yeah I know of some people that take liquid based protein supplements during their workout, dunno how much more you would get from it during, as your body is using mostly carbs during weight exercises.

Personally, and remember everyone is different, so you gotta work out what works for you, I just drink water while I work out. Anything else plays havoc on my guts when im really straining, and makes me feel ill.

Some research points towards a 20-30 min window of protien absorbtion post work out... personally I cant see the advantages of doing it during...

not unless you are trying to get 200+g of protein in a day inside you.

I would stick with the carb/electrolyte mixtures during. Protein is more needed for post-workout muscle repair. I’m only going on what I’ve seen and picked up from asking this myself, but I’d expect all the weightlifters in my gym would be intaking protein between sets if it was beneficial…and pretty much all wait until they’re done.

With regard to Lazydog’s question, if you are exercising for more than approx 30 minutes you would benefit from a carb/electrolyte mixture.

I mostly use SIS PSP22. It’s a brilliant all-round product as you can use it pre to load, and post workout too to replace.

SIS Go is another product, good for when your sweating madly in the heat. It also works as a salt replacement for endurance and has a little less kCal so you can take in more fluids.

Often for races I end up mixing both.

Horley's Replace - Its what I use while working out, its a good electolyte/carb replacement drink and it tastes good. I would def recommend that over a protein drink while working out.

Too maybe put a bit of bulk on/tone what's already there?

There is this other stuff I have at home been given to us at the 7's comp couple years ago. It's similar to replace, but has some other cool elements to it.

When I get home, I will post the name of it and what it's got in it.

I've made my own shake type for rugby trainings in the past (on the friend's advise who is a nutritionist). Basically it consisted of apple juice (obviously can be whatever you like juice), a bit of rock salt, and one scoop of protein powder. Sip that during the training, plus water.

After training you'd want something like a fruit salad (canned) and a protein shake.

I've managed to keep the weight, got stronger and lost most of the fat! Smile

Taken everything on board, but feeling a little experimental...

I already have a small tub of powerade powder that usually just sits there, but I put a mini scoop of that in my water bottle and half a scoop of protein powder in too. Going to do some additional training today. Just drinking my ritualistic very strong coffee atm, I always have one before the gym or running. Going to head to the gym in about 10 minutes... Razz

I don't see anything wrong with mixing Powerade with protein. Smile

Except for the taste.

Protein shake after a workout can be skulled and its over and done with. Have some powder in your drink making it taste like shit will more than likely end up with you not drinking as much as your should.

Thats why I like Replace gives you everything you need and none of you are trying to look like Arnie so no need for the protien during a workout.

I only had a little bit of protein powder in there and quite surprisingly it didn't taste too bad. Who would have thought chocolate+toilet duck flavour works? Oh um, I mean the blue powerade Razz

Awesome workout too Very Happy I'm just a little worried, this is almost another thread but I have a problem that whenever I set a precedent in training I refuse to backtrack every session after. If I do x km running I wont drop back and if I do extra or heavier weights I wont drop back either. Not sure it's always a good thing.

Just watch the calories.

Lots of people consume drinks like replace, powerade etc when they don't actually need to.
[quote]
So I worked out my little formula, if I use 1.5 scoops of the powerade and half a scoop of protein powder:

Protein: 11.8g
Carbs: 23.8g
Fat: .9g
kCal: 153.5
or kJ: 635

Crikey. But I'm on bugger all Cals anyway, I can fit it in.

yep. if you're trying to lose weight through the gym etc, probably want to ditch those drinks, as you don't need them. just use water.

saves your teeth as well...

Replace is like 110cal for 500ml.

You still don't need them for gym workouts, or runs less than an hour.
