Kelly Slater just claimed his 11th asp world title. Dude is a fucking legend.
[quote]
respect to that man

shame its not a ball sport

*shakes fist*

[quote]
He's like the Jesus of surfing, walks on water, went mad and disappeared, and re-appeared to perform miracles.
[quote]
I'd suggest he must be one of the worlds great athletes - has anyone gone away and come back in a similar manner in any sport (other than chess) like he has

wish tv here showed the surfing like they once did
[quote]
The thing with him is, when he went mad, it was over spono politics. He got shit for being too awesome, and co's like Rip Curl and Billy were sick of seeing Quikky logos all over any winning pics.
[quote]
Him and Schumacher have definitely conquered their chosen sports better than anyone else i can think of right now.
[quote]
driving isn't a sport...
[quote]
neither is chess.
[quote]
Yes it is, why it's even in the name. Motorsport. See?
[quote]
they have theatre sports too Kris

words mate, they're just words....

I have a feeling this won't go well for me but according to wiki: Chess is a recognised sport by the International Olympic Committee

Epic marathon Star Wars viewing sessions should be a sport.

True, but it could be.

So if we're quoting Wiki

quote:
Motorsport or motorsports is the group of sports which primarily involve the use of motorized vehicles, whether for racing or non-racing competition.

If anything, motorsport is *more* of a sport than surfing is. Motorsport is a race, and the outcome is clearly defined. Surfing is judged, just like ballroom dancing is, another sport recognised by the IOC.
[quote]
Oooh damn you, you precarious motherfucker!
[quote]
drifting competitions Kris are judged

some motor sports (see I know they're a sport) are not racing - refer Davil's post

I'm bored with this now.... sport is just silly

No one counts drifting as anything more than an exhibition by weirdos :>

Lance Armstrong??? Maybe wait until the drug allegations are either proven or dismissed once and for all.

surfing is more sport than motorsport. Motorsport is a race, in a car no less

Slater should retire
[quote]
why retire - he has years of competing ahead (in various grades) if he so chooses

surfing is one of those way of life pursuits...
[quote]
Exactly Bob.

I met Kelly Slater on Sunset Beach during one of the rip curl cups. Seemed quite down to earth.

Was thinking the same...motorsport is just a term to cover ALL forms of vehicle racing...it's no more a "sport" than poker

*stokes fire*

That's not to say I don't like it, or respect their skill, because I do...rally especially
[quote]
huh? of course it's sport, not sure why people are even debating this.
[quote]

Why the fuck should he retire?!
The dudes been getting grief all his surfing live (comp and free surfing), from spono drama, to claims of over scoring, and he keeps on owning.
Apart for when Fanning took it out a couple of years ago, and the AI drama.

Poker is about as much of a sport as a spelling bee is or competitive sleeping.
[quote]
Given his ability to summon waves with seconds remaining in a heat and bend the wind to his will I suspect he may be some sort of demigod. It must be utterly desolating watching Slater sitting out back with seconds remaining in the heat and then right on queue an eight foot wave appears and peels off into a perfect right hand barrell - on a lefthand break - three dolphines emerge to ride the wave around Slater, and a double rainbow appears...

On what grounds are you throwing surfing into the same category as Poker and Motorsport?

Confused
[quote]
you define the boundaries of what is "sport" then

gl
[quote]
Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
[quote]
and.. you didn't answer my question.
[quote]
Physical activity? So...anything where contestants are not 100% inert?

[quote]
davil said:

Because the arguements for and against various things, ie poker/surfing/motorsport/...are ridiculously complex and just about every conclusion can be proved incorrect

[quote]
I guess so..you'll have to hit the dictionary up on that one.

I can see how people see a difference between poker and motorsport. But how is surfing even close to being inert? surfing is 100% physical activity.

Theres loads of differences obv, but they are all competition. At least with poker its competative 100% of the time. Whereas surfing is actually a pastime and very rarely compeition

Im not argueing for poker to be a sport either, I dont t hink it is. But if crap like surfing and racing cars gets to be called sport then so does poker
[quote]
both surfing and motor sports need a degree of physical athleticism which according to wiki is one of the defining aspects of a sport

sport does not need to be competitive to be sport

poker can be (according to wiki) a sport but generally isn't considered one

everyone happy now

sport can include past time and recreation though.. it's not strictly competitive.
[quote]
Competitive - yes
Sport - No

1.) Strength; or
2.) Speed; or
3.) Coordination; or
4.) Reflexes; or
5.) Physical endurance; or
6.) Ability to play through pain

Okay, poker doesn't require any of those, unless you consider the strength needed to push large piles of chips into the middle of a pot, or maybe the manual dexterity necessary to see your hole cards without letting anybody else at the table get a clean look

agree.

If its competition, and some want to call it sport. You cant argue with that. Cos sooner or later someone will find a parralell/precent set by another "sport" to make their point. For example;People who go postal about poker being called sport, seem top ahve no problem with Chess being called sport, and when you dig into why, you uncover its becasue poker is considered "gambling". Which is irrelevant. Uncoming golf pros aree just as much gamblers as wanna be pro poker players imo

For me...if theres no ball involved, its very rarely a true sport. Its a race or a pastime or a game
[quote]
takes balls to take off on a freaking big wave - does that count... or is it just manufactured balls that count

^ This...WSOP of poker Main Event is 9 days or 8 to 10 hours of play, if you think that doesn't require endurance or the ability to push through when fatigued, you have no idea...you need to be mentally on the ball the whole time as one mistake can be your end

Mentally sure, not physically though and that's the definition of sport.
People will debate about this for eternity, but the fact is that poker is a competitive game and not a sport. That's not an opinion.

http://www.dictionary.com

Sport - an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature

There is nothing, even remotely, athletic about competing when playing poker in the slightest.

If poker is a sport, then professional poker players are athletes LOL

2.of, like, or befitting an athlete.

so stamina counts?. Ever played poker for 8 hours Lazydag?

Wheres the line between mental and physical anyway? Especially when its widely aknowledged that in any almnost sport the difference betweeen players and champions is the top 2 inches?

I'll have another go cos I dont think Im being clear.

Sport IS Mental....people get so caught up in this image of athletic looking people they fail to grasp this. They see some guy wandering up the 18th fairway about to shooot 64 and win a major golf tournament and their like "OMG HE's GOT A BEER BELLY WTF"

Well yes he does, but the reason that guy shoots low scores and is a champion sportman is he's got his shit togther up top. SPORT IS MENTAL GUYZ...and poker is the ultimate test of this

are you sure you want to put it that way

I read sport is mental as a polite version of SPORT IS RETARDED GUYZ

your point whilst valid can't be applied to all sports - some rely more on physical ability than mental agility... most require a bit of both...

I

I am not talking about the actual physical execution of the sport, Im talking about the things that make up the difference between champions and also rans

Preperation
Discipline
Repetition/Pratice
Positive Visualisation
Desire
Honest Introspection

all mental ^^^.. and all utterly vital to success/improvement, these are the things winners have in spades, regardless of the sport really

Yet so many are obsessed with athleticism Confused craziness.
[quote]
Sounds like work too Maestro.
[quote]
mental ability and agility are vital to most sporting successes coupled with physical ability - as is luck... pure and simple luck

sometimes the ability to turn the brain off can be the difference between winning and lossing... relying on muscle memory and reflex

and fuck you its beer oclock - a real test of champions

yeah ...fuck you too Very Happy I dunno why I always get involved in this scrap lol
