i do have every idea how serioulsy these nations take their respective sports (i.e the U.S and its football/ baseball; and england and the premier league etc...)
however, their fanaticism is much more localised...
look at the size and spread of the populations and the number of teams available to support. also lets not forget the fact that in soccer international fixtures are called 'friendlies'
the reason i said that we take Rugby too seriously here in NZ is for slightly different reasons...
rugby purists think that more rugby is better. no matter what. whereas in the U.S and in particular with Football, they have realised a more effective strategy for maintaining passion within the game, without people actually believing that it matters to their daily lives: the football season is all of 16 weeks. a hard, intense season, where every single game counts in the race to the superbowl. and at the end of it all, you have to wait 36 more weeks to see your lads in action again, and inevitably you're champin at the bit as they say...
anyhow, my point is, the way in which people take rugby too seriously when compared with the premiere league, or the major league, is far more dull and drab.
we have our dull, drab prime minister telling us that we are in a state of deppression coz we lost a friggin rugby game... come on... i just think that people in NZ tend to generally lack passion in what they do (obviously not everyone) and even those who are passionate about things like rugby are that way for the wrong reasons
