Skool Of Thought (UK)
If you had to list the top 10 hottest DJ / producers in breaks over the past 12 months, Skool Of Thought would be a dead cert for a podium finish. Fresh from releasing his debut artist album “Random Acts Of Kindness†with Ed Solo on Against The Grain (home to Krafty Kuts and Freestylers), Skool Of Thought is now widely being credited for injecting a breath of fresh air in to dance music. He has cementeda reputation for laying down insane tracks such as “When I Was a Yout,†to more musical styles such as “Love Your Life†along with thundering remixes of Groove Armada’s “Superstylin’†and Freestylers v Pendulum “Painkillerâ€. It’s clear Skool Of Thought’s versatile approach is winning him plenty of support, his Breakspoll 3 CD has sold well into the thousands in Australia and he has featured on the front cover of 3D, Australia’s biggest music publication. Now, as Skool Of Thought relocates himself and his record label to Australia he is determined to shake some fun back into the world of beats and breaks.
But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s spin back through the misty turntables of time, to the days when Skool of Thought was a young, slip of a lad; a time when you weren’t worth your salt unless you had an Atari ST in the studio. We find our man flipping through some dusty vinyl in a Brighton record shop, when a chance meeting with a little known DJ by the name of Krafty Kuts produced a meeting of musical minds. Discovering a mutual love for breaks, Skool Of Thought and Krafty Kuts set up the world-renowned SuperCharged club night in the UK. As resident DJs, the pair played every week to an ecstatic crowd. As the club night exploded, demand for the SuperCharged sound grew, and Against The Grain Records was born.
In walks Ed Solo; the shy and nocturnal part of the trio, who’s more elusive than a badger in the Sahara during daylight hours. Ed Solo & Skool Of Thought met when Ed was creating tunes with Krafty Kuts and, finding common ground in their approach to music, they decided to write tracks together. The first Ed Solo & Skool Of Thought single was the double a-side ‘Feel The Music’ and ‘Loud Noise’; the bottom heavy thumpers with a soulful twist which caught the attention of many in the scene and shot to number 1 in DJ Magazines Beats & Breaks chart. Their tunes were spotted by a production company working with MTV, and the boys were soon commissioned to write the music for the MTV EMA’s (European Music Awards), which later won an award for ‘Best Title Sequence’.
Following these early successes, the labels went into overdrive and soon they were celebrating the signing of the Freestylers to Against The Grain. The release of Freestylers “Push Up†single blew the roof off; selling over 100,000 copies worldwide, going top 10 in 5 countries and picking up a gold disc along the way, “Push Up†was by far the biggest selling breaks tune ever. Skool Of Thought, found himself as label manager and it wasn’t until last year that time permitted Ed Solo & Skool Of Thought to join forces once again write their debut artist album ‘Random Acts Of Kindness’.
‘Random Acts Of Kindness’ encompasses all of the sounds and styles that has influenced Skool Of Thought over the years; from reggae to drum n bass, from dubstep and breaks. This eclectic approach is filtering through to his DJ sets also “I feel inspired by the amount of good breakbeat orientated music out there and my sets will reflect that†he comments “those coming to my shows will be taken on a journey from slow to fast, from deep to hard, dubstep, breaks, baltimore, drum n bass and beyond, but let’s not forget its just a party at the end of the day!â€
