How do those japanese auctions work exactly? How do you you aren't buying a lemon? Are they any/much cheaper than buying from NZ after shipping?

Cars are graded in a 5 star system, 5 being brand new and 1 being a shitter etc, Basically if you buy nothing less than a 4.5 or 4 you can't go too wrong as long as its a reputable company, JDM is a good company with a good name, they have imported a number of skylines for guys off www.skylinesdownunder.com and come highly recomended, Ive been in contact with a guy there about the RX7 im after and they know their shit. And yes the cars are cheaper than buying in NZ, if I get the RX7 I want ill probably save $5k - $10k (but this is because the car im after is extremely rare here), the saving depends on the price of the car too. To be honest if you are after something specific they are awesome. If your after a common car it may be easier and will definately be quicker to buy one already here but having said that it'll probably still be cheaper from the wholesale company and they do all the work for you..

Another question about this... how hard is it to win an auction (generally) and how close to the starting price is it usually?

You don't actually bid on the auction yourself, basically you tell the guys there what you want, then they find what your looking for and you agree on a price, the idea is that they do all the leg work for you, if you have anymore questions send them an email, they are happy to help with adivce etc.
