Hey guys

Seems I might make the big move to London soonish Smile

I want to ship over a couple of boxes of work clothes and other random stuff from Auckland. Can anyone recommend shipping companies or give me any general tips?

Thanks Smile

yeah cost up to $1000 or more depending, it's probably not worth it. Clothes and shoes are cheaper here than in NZ too.

If you fly through the USA, they have more baggage weight allowance.

thats far from true
you could easily get more clothes for 1000 bucks in new zealand than if u came here and spent 300 quid on clothes.

Generally i think clothes in particular are extremely expensive if u look at the value of the item..

However if u do look at it relatively 30nzd = 30 pounds, then yea sure, things are cheaper, this would be ok if you were earning a relative salary to what you earnt in nz Very Happy

You can buy a nice tee for £12-15, which would be $40-50 in NZ. Jeans are about £30-50, which start at $100 last I remember pulling out the now dusty NZ credit card a couple of years ago.

Maybe £400-500 then, but my work suits cost £130-£150 max that I'd pay more than $500 at home, just for off the rack, not tailored.

I use a 2 for 1 rule for prices here to compare which seems to be appropriate. What would have cost you $100 costs £50 etc. Same for salary, so a £50K salary would be a six figure one in NZ. It's very rough but it helps to put a better spending power comparison than the exchange rate.

Gotta say though the last time I was home, I couldn’t work out the value of the NZ dollar anymore. I think it was like $1.60 for a chocolate bar or something and that totally threw me, when you pay 40 pence here.

I would love to know where to get a nice tee from for that price.
The ones ive found, are awesome, but 25 quid.
I recently bought 3 and i have another 3 tee's coming from new zealand.
A. for quality
B. because its cheaper

I guess at the end of the day it depends on what market your shopping in.
I do agree tho, sweets and the likes are alot cheaper here.

Your 2 for 1 rule seems fair on one off or smaller items, but generally i would feel ripped for anything bigger/more expensive.
If i had 1000gbp to spend in london, or 2600nzd to spend in nz, i know where im going to come off best and it aint the UK.

Mr. Green

On another note, i certainly do hope your 2 for 1 rule works out for me salary wise when i do return home, i would be a fairly happy chappy Smile however i wont hold my breath Very Happy

I did unaccompanied baggage through Air NZ, it was pretty cheap, but you have to pick up from Heathrow which is a hassle

Almost anywhere for a printed tee. The styles I see in the UK for £25 you’d pay more than $60 in NZ last I checked. But then I suppose you have been in NZ more recently than I have!

If you want cheap tee shirts you should order from the USA, not from NZ. 2 for 1 on the exchange rate bro.

Like I said the 2 for 1 rule is a really rough one but I think it works for both cheaper and more expensive items, it puts it into context for my UK salary vs what would be my NZ salary. If you’re on £25,000 you’d be doing the same job for about $45,000-$55,000 in NZ. (At least, that’s what it was in my first job here but then different jobs have different pay markets eh).

I’m not sure $2700 would go as far as £1000. But even if it did, the selection in London can’t be beat!

For work clothes, I know you get much better quality here than in NZ and I think it’s a bit cheaper. Certainly, though, it’s not worth shipping stuff over!

I shipped a smallish box round the 5kg mark for $90 just thru nz post.

That was a fair amount of clothes tho.

If your coming from nz with NZ money trying a buy a whole lotta clothes then yes you will find it expensive. But if you can last a couple of months and get a couple of paychecks under your belt then you will probably find the shopping pretty sweet.

I would defn advise shipping some extra clothes ahead of you if you've got a friends house to send it too. Is quite nice to just have that little bit extra selection, and good to not use up your weight allowance with work stuff. Especially if doing a bit of travelling on the way. (don't do the direct flight, make sure you stop somewhere on the way over)

Yeah I'm going to be cruising through Asia for 4-5 weeks on the way so I won't have much stuff with me at all, and don't want to have to arrive in London and immediately start clothes shopping.

Cheers guys

Right, does anyone know of a company that you use to sea freight stuff over?

I got given a website a couple of months ago and have completely lost it! need to send 2-3 crates over soonish...

Qui???

Teachest of up to 40KGs worth of shit shipping from NZ to Ireland is $220 (and $95 for any additional cartons). That's door to door, they send you the packaging, bubble wrap, tape, documentaion...you fill it up, they come back and collect it and take it to the door of where ever you want!

Are you guys trying to say you could replace all you bedding, you suits, your work clothes/shoes and more for only $220 NZ (75 pounds) coz I call bollox! Razz

kenzie - then above probably no good for you as you records will be too heavy, shop around for Freight Forwarders. Try to find one which delivers to your door and handles all customers clearance (and check that what you're paying upfront covers those other end clearance fees as they can be pretty ouchy!)
Places like this charge by the square metre and weight is gerenally irrelivant. I think from memory I paid $195 for a cubic metre (which is actually quite a lot more than it sounds) for the general shipping, but got stung a lot on clearance fees over here, so yeah, save the hassle of clearance fees and picking from customers yourself if you can.
