A fully-laden logging ship has run aground off the coast of Gisborne.

Five metre swells pushed the 156 metre-long vessel, the Jodie F Millennium, on to sand at around ten o'clock last night.

Gisborne port company chief executive Ben Tahata says the ship is currently sitting upright and is not moving.

The ship's master has told him there is no leakage or any pollution.

He says up to three tugs will be called into action later today to help refloat the ship.

Mr Tahata says there is a risk further heavy swells could push the ship onto the beach.

There are no concerns for the crew's safety.

Now why is it that we never get anything cool like that happening up here in aucks ?
