My Evolution

As a DJ, in the past few years my musical preferences have changed drastically. I’m constantly finding my sound evolving and looking for new direction or trying to incorporate new sounds into my current sets. This has lead me to become (in my opinion!) one of the most diverse house and trance DJ’s in the country. In the past few years I’ve now gone out of my way to see some of the best DJ’s in the world, from all genres and I’ve tried to take as much inspiration from them as possible, incorporating as many elements from them as I see fit to create extremely diverse sets with a variety of mixing styles and tunes. I guess the vision I have for myself in the future is to be the DJ you can book to play at any event at any time and be guaranteed to get an amazing set. I’m not at all prepared to sacrifice one genre for another; I’m constantly determined to give each its own full dedication and create a unique vibe by linking them all together.

However, amongst the genre cluttered madness which is my CD wallet, something within me always screams progression. When blurring the lines between genres, it’s an exact science, it must all flow perfectly. Hence I have decided to make this mix 4 hours long! In all honesty, I could of easily made this mix anywhere from 6 – 8 hours long and still be complaining I didn’t have enough time. I’m missing a fairly large portion of things I play, in fact while recording it I was devastated to look up and see that I’d reached the 3 ½ hour mark as I’d only just begun to feel like I was getting where I wanted it to go!

I’ve dug deep into the CD wallet for this mix. Pulling out a few tracks I’ve wanted to put on a CD for a while but never had the chance. The mix starts at about 128BPM and ranges from progressive house right through to banging 140BPM trance. Disc one moves through a few techy numbers but is predominantly progressive house and finishes up at around 130BPM. Disc two follows directly on from that, launching with quite a full on techy electro number, followed quickly by selection of more chunky full on progressive tracks and a mix of chunky electro trance which moves nicely through and into more bass driven uplifting trance, ending at about 134BPM. Disc 3 is fully trance, once again leading directly on from the previous disc. It moves on from uplifting into a slightly techier sound to shift up the BPM then back into some slightly more full on uplifting melodies, then finishes by moving into the harder edge of trance at around 140BPM.

Over the four hours there are 50+ tracks. I’ve tried to showcase a range of mixing styles and effects. As usual there are also smatterings of scratching throughout the whole mix, mostly done all by hand but I’ve also chosen to showcase a few techniques and extra effects available through the EFX1000. The past six months has actually seen me modify my scratching style quite dramatically, with the end goal of becoming far faster and tighter at it. Other effects I feel have been used sparingly and in moderation yet there are occasions I’ve used them simply to showcase the EFX1000.
