Save the Basin Reserve

Dear all,
If I could please take a moment of your very valuable time to highlight a huge potential issue for us Wellingtonians.

Like some of you, I was watching the news last night and to my horror saw that among others WCC are trying to make the Basin Reserve the world’s biggest roundabout and put a flyover in close by. This to my interoperation of the news will be pretty darn close to the glorious bank.

I am probably the least politically motivated person that you will ever meet and I am all for change for good. However, this would be a travesty if this were to go through! Coming from overseas this may sound like a cliché to you Kiwis, but you lot don’t know how lucky you are. The Basin Reserve is one of the most crowd and player friendly cricket venues that I have ever been to anywhere in the world and we should all take great pride in the fact that we have such a wonderful venue in our chosen hometown.
There was a public meeting last night but I am not sure what came out of that.

I am not sure what we should do or how to do it but I know with the amount of people that we all know collectively in Wellington and the lower North Island, NZ, the world that we could put out the call and possibly petition or lobby the right people and stop this happening.

*fails to see how that really changes the Basin itself*

It already was the second largest round about in the world...until they put the traffic lights in the middle of it...now it's just an extremely large traffic island, not a round about as those don't have intersections/lights. The flyover will mean motorway traffic goes straight into the tunnel, but won't the traffic lights still be there for the traffic coming off Kent/Cambridge Terrace???

This is what they're saying:

The atmosphere at the Basin will be completely ruined by this project. As the flyover will be hanging about the fence-line, the traffic noise levels within the Basin will be around double what they are today, and spectators will be lucky to hear the sound of bat on ball at all. In addition, the pollution from the cars and trucks will be free to blow across the Basin in the prevailing northerly wind, so the environment will be much less pleasant for spectators and player alike - it will become significantly more polluted and noisy than it is today.

OK, fair enough, nothing a taller fence wouldn't fix though, eh? It's not like the volume of traffic will increase, it'll just be higher up than it currenly is...simple solution, big fucking wall...NEXT!

this project is utter bullshit. once the flyover is up and running congestion at the mt vic tunnel will be so bad they will have to invest approx $170million building a new tunnel.

after the 'success' of the bypass, i thought the council would have learned

i understood there was a plan to build a new grandstand above the old toiletblock and blocking out the worst of the flyover - and not impringe upon the bank.

This project looks bad, but I would say the bypass has been somewhat of a success...?? innercity traffic is def not as bad anymore trying to get across those roads...

I do not like the idea of fumes and noise entering the basin though...

They should just go underneath it!!!!

yeah, but then the council will have to invest ridiculous amounts of money to expand the tunnel because it will bottle neck there.. how is this helping..?

if they are that keen to spend money i vote they imbed a wave machine at lyall bay so we can at least pretend to have a surf beach.

bottle necking traffic at a tunnel = teh cant be fucked with that shit innit.

That tunnel could do with another, alternating, lane regardless of whether this flyover happens or not...2 lanes towards city in morning...two the other way in the arvo.

Traffic bottlenecks there as is, the flyover won't change that.

They need a new tunnel from Haitaitai right through to the Terrace tunnel. All this other bullshit just isn't going to work and is going to fuck up one of the best parts of the city further.

im still down with imbedding the wave machine in lyall bay instead. or what about a water slide / flying fox off the top of maida vale road in roseneath? this is easily far more logical and useful than adding another pitiful addition to an already screwed roading system.
