RWC - TV Rights

Why isn't TVNZ or more importantly the govt prepared to cover the supposed $5 mil shortfall TVNZ figured the TV rights would cost the channel? (refer herald)

We taxpayers are stumping up hundreds of millions for this event yet this tiny bit extra can't be covered by us to ensure all NZ'ers can view the games (if they choose to) via free to Air TV

They are. They just make decisions like this based on severity of public outcry.

um a child could have predicted the outcry on this one...

You'd think putting a pile of ambitious politicians together would result in some good ideas but actually it seems to often take on crowd mentality: collectively they actually lose intelligence.

First of all, it is only for the LOCAL (as in NZ) and FREE TO AIR broadcasting rights. Sky will still do all the games and, one presumes, the international broadcasting feed.

At first I was opposed to the MTV bid, but then I realised I couldn't think of a good reason really beyond a reflexive bit of wishful thinking that TVNZ could still actually be the state broadcaster.

The reality is though MTV is now the "local" broadcaster. TVNZ has completely lost the plot, and should be sold and left to slower sink into irrelevance. I've heard some MTV rugby league broadcasts in Maori, and they sound a lot more excited and engaged than the funereal Sky commentary team.

If everyone had digital tv with dual English / Maori audio feeds it wouldn't even be a problem eh.

There's very dodgy elements in this latest bid as Pita Sharples is 100% right. It's fucked that the government can supply confidential information to Maori TVs competitors to outbid them.

Regardless of whether it's right for Maori TV to bid in the first place, this latest bid is horrifically wrong.

This is just retarded now. Government throws money at TVNZ to up their bid against the Maori TV bid.

And now we have Maori TV saying they are going to "rich Iwi and companies" for more money to up their bid.

WHAT THE FUCK? This is madness ...and why didn't Maori TV look to get money from other sources first as an option rather than going straight into some Maori development fund?
