Of course, I only meant by recent standards.

The politics surrounding the solidifying of the EU and NATO along with The US missile defense shield are certainly large contributing factors to the recent show of force... However, excuse my ignorance but why is it that Russia must still be treated as an adversary?

I understand historic resentment left over from the cold war era, but in my opinion they should be included in rather than crowded out... otherwise there will be inevitable conflict in the future.

What is preventing Russia joining the EU or NATO in the mid to long term?

A Bullish Bear! Being on the horns of that sort of bestial dilemma should give all paws for thought.

Details?

Who's airspace was it in, and was it meant to be there?

Why should Russia join the EU or NATO?
What does it gain?
Russia's destiny is to rule Europe.

Russia couldn't even pacify poxy little Chechnya, how could they pacify the entirety of Europe???

The Balkans alone would tie up their entire South-Western Army...

The Russians fought with a hand behind their backs.
1949, they were finishing at Le Havre unless the cowardly west used nukes.

He's just stirring....

There are European countries with nukes in their arsenal and inclusion into Americans defence shield, so I can't see their sovereignty being directly jeopardized by a future Russia. If anything European countries will lose their influence from a slow institutional subduing via the EU constitution or from a large dependency on foreign resource.

I know that one of the main reasons NATO was created in the first place was to counter Russian ambition, but now Communist power seems redundant and Russia is regenerating and slowly rising to prominence as a market economy, I think these European zones or alliances are going to cause future political tension if allowed to fester in this manor.

I would rather Russia was included somehow than neglected and I know its going out on a limb here and not exactly a popular sentiment amongst EU countries or Russians, but I'm thinking this issue should be nipped in the bud now, otherwise it seems it will create an environment where wasted expenditure and resource allocation via unnecessary geopolitical competition will develop.

Maybe in the first invasion but certainly not the second.

The almost total distruction of Grozny is testament to that.
