'A district court judge has discharged a professional rugby player without conviction, saying the player paid "a very public price" for allegedly assaulting two females while out celebrating a rugby victory.'

'Vula Maimuri escaped convictions on two charges of male assaults female in the Whangarei District Court yesterday after being accused of punching and slapping two women in central Whangarei.' - NZ Herald 28.11.02

His punishment included making a donation to Womens Refuge and paying money to the two victime.

Apparently once again there appear to be two standards of justice in New Zealand, one for sports stars/ rugby players and one for everyone else.

Vula had also initially been charged with resisting arrest, disorderly behaviour and another charge of assaulting a female but these charges were dropped.

Would an ordinary NZ male receive the same leniency?

I tend to agree with the Judge.

The answer to your question is yes. For a minor assault the sentence is what anyone would get.

Thanks just a half I was asking about the conviction being discharged. The herald article didn't make any mention whether he had used diversion.
