well smileydude, hope you got your ass down to the bowler on friday to see mr salmon.
he really challenged my definition of "house music", and not in a chin-rubby kind of way either. the place was jumpin' to his mad styles!
anyone who's tired of hearing the same five songs every time they go out should try checking him out before he heads overseas again. me... i'm heading down to marbecks to get his mix cd out of the sale bin. dam fools! Smile

Fair cop on the repetitive tune angle - but it's an interesting topic - firstly - god how I'd love to have Satellite Records on my doorstep - we're talking probably the best store in the universe for a DJ - NZ aint got that for starters - unless buying on-line from them of course - which does get you different stuff, but not in the way NY DJ's do.

It's also fair to say that the punters - who hear the same 5 tunes - well that's what they want to hear - cos chuck anything a little left field on and watch the dancefloor recede faster than my hairline - then chuck on a 'hit' and watch em come flocking.

Now it takes a special DJ that needs to work hard at defining a sound that makes people like/respect them - I would say if there was somebody out there playing alternative stuff all the time they'd not get heaps of work, the dancefloor would not be working - they'd get no profile - so much respect for the DJ's that have made a niche for themselves - like Mr Salmon - and are out there doing it.

I also heard that Mr Salmon played Finally by KOT towards the end of the night - so it swings both ways - a tune I personally wouldn't ever get/play cos it's been thrashed to death.

I just think it's an interesting topic - a catch 22 almost...

Sounded like a real journey for those at WBC - all good by all accounts...

mata, absolutely... i couldn't agree more!
as a punter i know we went f*cken mental when gene farris played "romeo", or derrick carter dropped "get your freak on", or sanchez and his "sweet dreams", "finally", "addicted to bass", "another chance", "i never knew" etc etc chart mix... everyone loves a good sing-a-long. Wink
and it wasn't that mr salmon didn't play the hits, i heard "ride the storm" and "la-la land" among others as well. it's what he played in between that set him apart from a regular local house night. it was *challenging* and *fresh*. admittedly that has a lot to do with being able to source vinyl from NY etc - and i guess that's part of what we're paying for when we go to see the internationals.

i mean, our locals are technically brilliant and their track selection is awesome without a doubt, there is absolutely no question there. and i love and support the local guys and girls big time.
but often it's the internationals (and the prodigal sons who return to these shores - nathan haines springs to mind as well) who introduce us to the future sounds of house, simply because they are exposed to a different environment and a vast array of influences that just aren't present here (and way cool record stores too) Smile
the other problem we face in NZ is the "it's not cool till it's cool overseas" mind-set, which makes it hard for the locals to break new ground admittedly.
however, there wouldn't be a nz house scene without you guys - period. the internationals tunes would be falling on deaf ears if weren't being educated every week in the clubs around town. house in akl is phenomenal. it's huge! go down country and it's nothing like this at all.

my comments were directed at the regular posters who complain that all they ever hear is the same ol' same ol' when they go out, and really a recommendation to check out something different if they're into that. for the same reason i'll be recommending opeople check out derrick may and jeff mills this month...
me i can't wait to hear "you are my high" and andrea brown's "crazy" when i'm out again! massive respect to you guys who have to play what the crowd thinks they want every week...

...and go the lively debate in the house forum!

peace.

Yeah - totally agree too - wasn't giving you a hard time at all - it's just something that I've been thinking about of late - seems like a lot of people want something different - but when you deliver - they run for cover. I would say most DJ's could play stuff all night that hardly anybody has heard - but that's selfish - and it really is up to reading the crowd as best you can - I get more requests for the likes of sanchez and the ones than for 'something different' - and other thing is - it's such a wide scope - 'different' - but what I'd say is there's definitely holes in our scene - hopefully people are out there fillen em up

I agree mata. Its like "Play something different - but not TOO different". Crowds in NZ are quite fickle like that but only with local DJs. Internationals can pretty much drop whatever they like and people will lap it up. Like you said ravey_dave, "its not cool til its cool overseas". Geez we've got some weird attitudes in NZ!

It takes a lot of moxie to chose your own direction and stick with it. And you'd have to have the right venue to play it in. Unfortunately, I don't think we have the population where we can support that kind of 'experimental' (which isn't even experimental really) scene as a regular club night. There are the kind of people around that would support it, but they're not really in the numbers required for a regular pumping club night.

But as a once-a-month type party... I really like 'true believers' for that. The couple of times I've gone, I've hardly recognized anything which is very refreshing.
