Richie Hawtin launches Twitter app for Traktor - 30 April, 2009

"Pioneering techno DJ Richie Hawtin [a] has announced the development of a new Twitter application that enables him to broadcast his Traktor tracklists in real time over the network.

The custom Twitter application was developed in-house by Richie Hawtin’s label Minus [l], and it works by uploading song metadata through Traktor Pro’s inbuilt broadcasting functionality.

Track details are automatically posted to Richie Hawtin’s Twitter account every 30 seconds (you can already see Traktor tracklist updates on his Twitter), giving anyone access to the tracklist of his performance, and providing exposure to the artists and labels whose music is being played.

The Twitter app is so advanced that it inspired Native Instruments to add the functionality themselves to version 1.2 of Traktor Pro which will be released as a free update.

That means that soon everyone will be able to tweet their tracklists via Traktor. Awesome! "

Finally - no more tearing your hair out over not knowing what track Mr big DJ is playing. I'm sure a lot of people are stoked but I'm actually pretty gutted. Thoughts?

I always wanted the big names to keep the gems to themselves, and loved that annoying feeling of not knowing a song (or hearing it once and never again). Am i jumping to conclusions or will everyone now be playing the same stuff? Plus I really did like going out there hunting for music discovering my taste. Did we need to be even more so spoonfed than we already are?

Flipside... if many artists did this, I could use it in moderation - to find that track I'm mega dying to know... and hey might discover a dope artist/label. Though surely most people will abuse this feature causing the negativity I mentioned above?

I think its a good thing. Personally, my tastes arent shifted by what I hear other people playing, but if I hear tracks in their sets and want to track it down for myself, this will be handy. Yes though, you probably will see a lot of DJs start playing the same tracklists as the big boys (well, to a greater extent than we see already) Smile

The big names will still keep gems to themselves though, those that use a combination of digital and vinyl as vinyl has no metadata Wink

Lame imho

Hawtin was much better when he just used vinyl and you worked out the tracklist from reading the back of the cd.

These are interesting days for sure, my friend, and people will argue both sides of the coin for years and years. All the hype of the great Digital Debacle as I have come to call it will be fodder for enthusiasts until technology evolves past the point where we "listen" to music.

In my humble opinion, vinyl will never die. You will simply see people taking sides on the issue, and a mutual respect based on the medium will develop between vinyl spinners all over the world in the face of most of the scene going digital Cool

Yeah sorry for potentially diverting the thread down this well traveled route Smile

I don't necessarily have a problem with digital djing (or twitter for that matter). I just think in Hawtin's case he was notably better fiddling with a couple of pieces of vinyl and a 909 and the more technology he embraces the less interesting his sets seem to be.

Yeah. Cause live playlisting via twiter is really pionering.

When did convienince replace innovation?

Native Instruments disagrees with you Razz

No. Its just another 'feature' they can sell.

I'm sure they will market it as 'pioneering' though, and people will lap it up.

Yeah I agree its dumb in a way. But. He is a massive name now, and him putting a tracklist on Twitter, like it or not will help many of the artists he is playing sell more records/downloads. Which is a good thing surely. Maybe not 'underground' enough though.
That clothing brand though. Jesus butt raping christ. I think he wants to be a model more than anything.
Hey Proof. I met a guy at work who used to work with you at DMC.
English fella. Have forgotten his name like the useless cunt flap I am. Small world but.

See.. what gets me, is what he was doing live as Plastikman - with the AV thing, was pushing boundaries. It was enough that it motivated me to start to develop something similar. But for some reason - that project seemed to stop dead in its track for him. Was it too much work for not enough perceived return or something?

Live tracklisting on Twitter just doesn't really seem that exciting; functional maybe, but certainly not pioneering?
[quote]
Any more uses of the word Pioneering in this thread and were going to run into trademark issues. If people could instead use the word "Newfangled".

Kthnx Smile
[quote]
Using the word Newfangled is the pioneering new way of saying pioneering.

everyone seems to read dj's top 10's on RA, Podcast tracklistings, Groove Magazine top 10's etc.

I don't really see this being any different. If someone is going to waste enough time listening to samples of every track he puts on twitter to find a couple they will buy, power to them.
