SATOSHI TOMIIE
Achievements, they don’t come much higher than converting a nation to club music. Yet that’s exactly what Japanese music
prodigy and electronic house producer Satoshi Tomiie accomplished.
Hailing from the cultural hub that is Tokyo, from an early age Tomiie’s parents vigorously encouraged him to play the piano and
pursue all forms of music and composition. Not surprisingly, his fascination with all forms of music became
stronger as the years past. That his school years were spent following jazz music before switching to hip hop surprised no one.
Although his primitive years were spent listening to jazz and hip hop, he soon developed an interest in keyboards and, in the early ‘80s, formed his inarguable band.
Fast track a few years, before Tomiie was asked by a Japanese cosmetics company to collaborate with house marvel Frankie
Knuckles for an upcoming show. As the ‘80s were dwindling to a close, house music was at an interesting juncture – gradually
spreading across and populating continents with its contagious sound. Knuckles recognised Tomiie’s talent and enormous potential. The result was ‘Tears’, a now classic anthem that’s achieved cult status.
Born in 1966, Tomiie’s seen the movers and shakers. He’s seen trends pass and faux sounds fade into
obscurity. He’s collaborated on at least several dancefloor bullets, including Robert Owens’ hit ‘I’ll be Your
Friend’. He’s also remixed for some of the major names in the music business, counting Madonna, Bowie, Diana
Ross, U2 and Michael Jackson amongst his credits.
Although primarily known for collaborations, Tomiie has released singles under his own moniker. His
contract with legendary label Sony saw a flurry of activity, including his debut album, Full Lick, and set of
mix CDs that showcased the multiplicity of his DJ sets.
A man of many talents, Tomiie has also mixed compilations for the celebrated Global
Underground series but his relationship and contribution to Renaissance remains
obvious. After two well received albums for the Renaissance brand, Satoshi Tomiie
returned last year with a new volume in the acclaimed 'The Masters Series' that will
usher in his tour to Australia in April. As one of the flagship series for Renaissance,
Satoshi Tomiie follows on from DJs that include Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Danny
Howells, Nick Warren and Deep Dish in what is sure to be another phenomenal release.
Tomiie delivers a contemporary double disc with this instalment of ‘The Master
Series’ marrying undiscovered gems with future classics. The upfront tracklisting
draws on some of the hottest production talent, from his soulful house roots through
to the contemporary electronic sound of Europe. Tomiie weaves a twisted, magical
path that blends house favourites such as Layo & Bushwacka!, Jimpster and Atjazz
alongside exciting, contemporary stars such as Marc Romboy, Adultnapper and Lee Jones.
A man wearing many hats, Tomiie is head of SAW Recordings, which has been a platform for many
productions since its inception in 2001, including his latest single ‘Madrugada’ released under the alias, Mes.
A house music veteran, and along with house stalwarts Frankie Knuckles, Hector Romero and David Morales,
Tomiie also remains a crucial third man in the Def Mix Productions crew –all whilst maintaining a demanding
touring schedule that canvasses the globe.
