OK so somehow (I suspect my Nephew) my Mum in Napier has got a virus on her PC. I've talked her through how to F8 to safe mode with network support in XP (30 minutes of my helpdesk time), and talked her through Windows Remote Assistance (27 minutes) but she has Xtra boadband and so (due i think to the wireless broadband router) I can't resolve the remote host using that tool.

Anyone know of a freeware tool I can get that will maybe set up some sort of tunnelling to get around the DSL router blocking access??

This is my mum. I'll get reminded three times a day that I am a bad son until I can fix her PC...

She's initiating Remote Assistance via Messenger?

Yes.

And did you recieve it?

It uses port 3389. Might have to port forward.

Yup. I get the request, it's a time out issue.

Actually, its just occured to me - she has her internet connection shared...

Okay, two things are probably happening

1- You're getting the timeout cos the request she's sent you has her computers local IP address as the recipient. So probably 192.x.x.x or 10.x.x.x. You won't be able to reach her with that IP so will need to change the file that comes with the invite to reflect her external IP address. Don't think you can do that with messenger so she might have to email you the invite instead. She'll also have to find out her external IP address. A quick Google will find a site that will do that for her. (this is al from memory when reading up on RA, never used it myself)

2- She'll have to set up port forwarding on her router. It's no good having her computer listening for your response on port 3389 if the router doesn't know where to send your packets on to when it receives them.

try logmein.com

heaps easier as it runs over SSL so if she can use internet banking, then it will work
