Have one month to kill in Berlin & another month in Barcelona

recommendations for both? best places to stay? best places to eat? best places to see? Interesting stories you want to share or something completely off topic would also suffice...

A month in both places is a decent length of time, especially Barcelona. What time of year are you going to be there?

Berlin from early August and then Barcelona after that.

We have already decided that we will be hiring an apartment in both places so now I am more concerned about what the best areas to stay in are. Nothing too touristy, loud or noisy as we are there for one month so I think that will tire really quickly. Definitely going to hire a car for a few days here and there in order to get out of the city and see some sights, visit some wineries.

Any reason why you are staying a month in each city rather than travelling around and seeing a bit more of Germany and Spain? Are you doing you OE?

It's a holiday and one month in each because that's how I want to travel.

The main idea is to get a feel for what it would be like to live there. Also when doing my research I found it's much more cost effective to stay in one place for a decent amount of time because that brings down your costs in terms of accommodation and also food because you can do a lot of your own cooking.

The main thing I'm interested to know about Barcelona is what are the different districts like in terms of atmosphere. There's only so much google street view you can do really, so I want to hear where people stayed and what they thought of it. I am aware that most probably would have stayed in Gotico or near Las Ramblas or in Barceloneta. I'm not really interested in that, I'm thinking about finding a nice place in one of the outer districts like Eixample, Gracia or Sants-Monjuic where I'm going to get more bang for my buck. What were your experiences with the public transport system etc?

With Berlin I'm really interested to know if everyone just buggers off out of the city for summer, we will be there from early August so I am aware that people will be leaving to go on holiday. It would be a bit of a drag if things were a little bit dead. Although I do realise that in a city of 3 million odd people that's probably not going to be too much of an issue but would still like to hear some stories from people.

Don't worry about Berlin having an "empty" feel about it in Summer...

I hear what you're saying about staying a month in each city, but personally I'd be more in favour of travelling around a bit. I don't think it would make much difference to food/accom costs either.

Check out ALL the related Gaudi architecture in Barcelona. Even if you're not into architecture it's fully cool.

Berlin: Panorama Bar on a Saturday night
Barcelona: Razzmatazz any night Cool

Good point on Berlin actually, anybody know what rent is like?
[quote]
Rent's pretty cheap. Don't think about working there though unless you have some extremely marketable skills and/or are fluent in German. 30% unemployment in Berlin. Might be more now.
