ITT we share our favourite docos. I'm interested both in seeing people's opinions/tastes and in finding good shit to watch.

My personal favourite docos are a couple done by one Francesco Da Mosto. They're beautifully shot, he is engaging, and the subject matter is exactly the kind of stuff I love experiencing from the other end of the planet.

"Venice" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0432242/ << Tale of the origins of Venice through to the present.

"Francesco's Italy: Top to Toe" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0770536/ << Francesco travels throughout Italy with little stops along the way to share the sights.

"Francesco's Mediterranean Voyage" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1034227/ << Francesco travels by yacht from Venice to Istanbul with stops along the way and insights into the history of the locations he visits.

I Scored a Goal In the World Cup Final - If you like football and haven't seen this you are missing out.
The Two Escobars - Great documentary about the relationship between football in Colombia and Pablo Escobar, then the events leading up to the murder of Colombian football captain Andres Escobar.
[quote]
Gah, was meant to go see The Two Escobars at the NZFF but missed out due to work. Will definitely have a look at both of those, cheers ^_^

The Perfect Vagina

Lisa Rogers investigates vaginal cosmetic surgery and why more and more women consider this surgical procedure

Kinda disturbing, but very interesting at the same time! Laughing

I had the misfortune to watch Victorian Sex Exploration on sky the other morning. Apart from learning the indians used to draw depictions of lesbians welding dildo headed arrows fired at close range by bows, it was a let down.

The grand tour docos on TV recently by the Grand designs guy was really interesting as is grand designs.
[quote]
Bus 174
The Corporation
King of Kong
Manufacturing Dissent
Food Inc
Fathead
Big River Man
When We Left Earth
Fog of War
Taxi to the Dark Side
Farenheit 9/11 (just for lol value)
The Take
Coke vs Pepsi

Are some faves that come to mind...

[quote]
Oh and of course nearly all the Louis Pereaux (sp) ones...
[quote]
Been meaning to see Manufacturing Dissent for a while but had forgotten about it entirely, cheers

More than a Game - Doc on Lebron James and his high school basketball team, gives you a good feeling for how out of control it got for him when he was so young.

King of Kong

The Comedians of Comedy

Yes, want to see this. And also agree on the Grand designs tour, great vierwing.

I fully recommend a doco i watched at a mates a while back on the clubbing culture in Berlin. The crew got snapped filming outside berghain, apparently it was the closest any film crew had got at that point. Really interesting watch though. They hit up clubbers as well as the DJs involved in it all over the last 10 years or so. Luciano and Villalobos Talking about why they do what they do, well inspiring stuff. Its subtitled for most of it, but as with a good movie, i didnt even notice after a while. Ill hit my mate and find out the name of it for you. Smile

The Last Resort - God defend our free land... http://www.cutcutcut.com/Last_Resort.html Its about coastal development in NZ

And, Seeds of Summer.. http://www.frameline.org/festival/film/detail.aspx?id=1648&FID=45 Is about girls conscripted into the Isreali armed forces

This is really good, its truly beyond belief what the guy did and incredible that someone could achieve that level of self control.

I don't watch a lot of docos but have seen a few really good ones over the past year...

apocalypse - the second world war
the ascent of money
bbc - leonardo da vinci
tyson

My favourite bit was when they showed the dolphin show at the aquarium, where the crowd sat eating deep fried dolphin or something, while watching the beasts frolic Laughing

The Cove was my favourite movie last year Very Happy It looks like it's finally getting released in Japan too which is great.

Anything by Ken Burns (The West, War, The Civil War, National Parks, Jazz etc)

Some recent ones from the festival that you should hunt down as soon as they get released:

Inside Job
American: The Bill Hicks Story
The Most Dangerous Man In America
Collapse
Oceans
Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work
Gasland - this shows contaminated tap water catching on fire. TAP WATER CATCHING ON FIRE!.

I want to check out Life too, a Discovery/BBC co-production - the sequel to Planet Earth. For some reason the US version replaced the David Attenborough narration with Oprah Winfrey though... I know who I would rather listen to...

Stoked: The rise and fall of Gator (great doco for anyone who wore Vision Street Wear in the 80's. Gator murdered a girl and buried her in the desert)

The Man Who Souled The World - another one for anyone who was into skating in the last 80's early 90's. Also has some cool footage of Jason Lee as a pro skater, pre Kevin Smith movies, My Name is Earl days.

Crazy Love

Cocaine Cowboys

Grizzly Man (Possibly my fav doco of all time)

Pumping Iron (Arnie at his best)

Edit: how could i forget 'Guys and Dolls'
this website is great for streaming and has that designer vagina doco on it

oh shit i can't believe i forgot this -

tony - you have to watch this man. i was crying like a baby by the end of it and it has nothing to do with the fact that i have a son now. i think. heh

totally fucked up story. TOTALLY FUCKED UP. but i guess this doco is the only good thing to come from it. actually i think i would go as far to say that this was the most moving thing i have ever seen. not necessarily in a good way.
