I prefer the American version. Rooney Mara is brilliant.

Only thing I didn't like was the casting of Daniel Craig which I feel removes a bit of the tension as it's hard to believe that he isn't perfectly capable of defending himself. Otherwise I felt this was one of those rare times that a bigger budget and the hands of a more experienced director actually helped the story and improved the film.

Saw Safe House tonight with Denzel and Ryan Reynolds.. passable thriller enjoyable at the time but not one you will be thinking about weeks, days or even minutes afterwards. Best thing about it was the Kanye song in the credits lol.

I read a really good article the other week about Ozu. Was really interesting to read about his techniques and what he was trying to achieve with them. I'll see if I can hunt it out for you. I am a newcomer to his work after I read he was such a big influence on Scorsese. Really interesting director.

I completely disagree with your opinion on Guns of Navarone though. Razz :>

Do post, all I know about Ozu is from wiki and a few amazon reviews.
I'll give Guns a second chance one day, maybe i just wasnt in the mood. It just seemed like tripe.

Roger Ebert is quite a fan of Ozu. Tokyo Story is a pretty damn awesome film.

Martha Marcy May Marlene - 8.5/10.

Such a good film... not really a fan of non-endings like this, but it was done well.

Elizabeth Olsen is MUCH hotter than her older sisters mary-kate & ashley.. and a awesome actress.

Very interesting. Yes Tokoy Story is so simple and powerful. However I currently have no taste for Japanese movies until my pissy manipulative Japanese flatmate and her tantrum prone door bashing kiwi boyfriend exist this flat! Then I have lined up some more Ozu, Kobayashi's Harakiri and Imamura's Ballad of Narayama which looks to be one very distrubing film.

Get some Kurosawa in ya!

Shichinin no Samurai is the birth of the action epic. Without it there'd be no LOTR or Heat or any movie where a bunch of guys get together for a mission, plan for it and then execute the fuck out of it. Even now the action sequences kick some serious ass. In my top 10 for reals.

Or if that's too obvious for ya, get into Rashomon. The historical trivia for this film is that this is the first film to cast doubt over the narrator. It's a film in which 4 people tell their version of what happened in a robbery/rape in a forest and they're all different, each telling is slightly biased to that narrator. Normally you'd find out that one person is telling the truth but what if they're all lying! It has become such an influential narrative device that the word Rashomon is used to describe similar situations/stories. Also from a technical perspective, it's also the first movie where the camera is pointed directly at the sun. :>

Three time-travel related movies *SPOILERS AHEAD*

I have recently re-watched Primer www.imdb.com/title/tt0390384/ (for about the 10th time) and it still captivates me. I love how the storyline(s) get increasingly more complicated, as would happen when one starts messing around with time travel. The actors do a brilliant job for total amateurs, though they are playing baffled tech-heads, which is what they really are, so I guess it may not have been that huge of a leap.

In the vein of Primer I also sought out Los Cronocrímenes (Timecrimes) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480669/. I really enjoyed it but was left wanting. I thought the narrative was far too linear for a time travel movie where *SPOILER* the protagonist crosses paths with himself several times. Also despite some rather emotionally trying events taking place, there wasn't a huge connection to be made with the main characters, especially the protagonist. Much like Primer it starts slow and becomes increasingly dense but the characters are not fleshed out. This is one film where I really am looking forward to the American remake which should be coming out some time this year.

The third is Triangle http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1187064/. It is very much a B-horror/thriller, straight to dvd, style movie. It stars Melissa George who provides a really good performance I thought. She is seriously put through the wringer and for most of the movie she looks god-awful (in that she is crying all over the place and what not). It struck me as kind of odd at first, but then I realised I'm just used to actresses in movies coming out of pretty much any situation looking rather pristine save from a tactical smear of makeup and ripped clothing. This again is a movie where *SPOILERS* the protagonist crosses path with themselves a few times, and the intersections are far more complex and convincing, I thought, than Timecrimes. There are some ultimately gaping plotholes but I was thoroughly impressed (for a b-grade horror/thriller) at the narrative. It very much reminded me of Ghost Ship in terms of production and... they're both set on ships ^_^
[quote]
Definitley keen for some more Kurosawa, just waiting for the bloody fuckers to appear on bluray Razz
Have only seen Ran so far, and man that is intense. Seems with these Japs you either get this very suble Ozu stuff or you get a giant whack in the face from the likes of a Kurosawa or an Imamura
I guess Burmese Harp by Ichikawa is more inbetween

Weird. I always thought LOTR was loosely based on some book pubished in the 1950s. Guess you learn something new every day. If you really want to trace things back, you can't go past the Odyssey for the 'birth' of 'quest' stories, although I am sure other cultures had other quest stories prior to then.

Not at all, obviously LOTR is based on a book which is also based on older traditions, but Peter Jacksons cinematic adaptation on it as an action epic is influenced by earlier films, of which The Seven Samurai is a major one. Every film genre or sub genre has certain conventions that define them, they all had to originate somewhere.

The Kurosawa influence doesn't end there too, the fortress siege scene in Ran is the visual precursor to the battle of Helms Deep. Lots of visual references there.

So you can take your dead tree and smoke it. Razz

Awesome, thanks, been meaning to watch Primer for ages, but the name kept escaping me as I never wrote it down..after being up all night partying this was perhaps not a wise choice...what a head fuck...super complex and pretty sure even stone cold sober they'd be bits I just will plum never understand, but still a highly enthralling film, so well done for what is obviously such a low budget, no-name actors piece of passion kinda film. Amazing, even though you won't understand it, I highly recommend it. Feels like one of those films you need to watch many many times, and then still need to read up about to truely understand...these loads of stuff on the net dissecting and analysing this film, I was not in the head space to read pages and pages and pages of sciencey nerd speak when I watch it though.

Triangle I also thoroughly enjoyed, Melissa George's performance was great, more or less a strung out sweaty filthy mess for the whole film, no glamour shots up in this bitch, another reasonably good head fucker, but nothing in the league of Primer...so super chilling bits at times though as it all spiralled together.
[quote]

Movie related:

quote:
What happens when you seamlessly cut and splice together chase scenes from 14* of the biggest big budget action flicks — including The Rock, The Matrix Reloaded, Transformers, and Bad Boys II? You get this absolutely amazing eleven-and-a-half-minute short film calledChasing Trinity: Part 2. It's the biggest, baddest, most Michael Baygasmic car chase... in the world. Ever.
Here's what YouTube user BlueYoda has to say about the "plot" of his spliced-together masterpiece of motor-enhanced mayhem:

The story thus far: Will Smith is chasing Trinity after she tries an escape with the secret documents. Sean Connery is not far behind and Nicolas Cage tries to keep up, but Matt Damon intervenes. A huge meta car chase ensues.

Plot? What the hell is that? I don't watch car chases for plot. I watch them just so I can take a short break from mainlining my normal potent mix of amphetamines, cocaine and synthetic adrenaline. You know, just like Michael Bay does. Awesome!

It's actually kinda pretty well edited I think!

[quote]
It's ok, cool idea. Quite easy for the editing to look good when you've already got the good in and out points set by the original editor though Razz
[quote]
hah, yes, but looking closely but there's a lot of clever details - like one point where a Chev SUV flips and you'd swear it's the same car until you llok closer and it's actually the same type of car in a slightly different colour from two different movies.
[quote]
Yeah that's quite cool, would be fun to make something like this Smile

Yeah, although i didn't hate that part per se... it did feel a little out of synch with the rest of the movie. Still though.. that movie is another example that Spielberg is a master of his trade.
[quote]
Yeah I have a soft spot for that film too. Stupid future alien robot whatever the fuck shit was silly, but hey.

I think the most Kubrick part of the film was the way lighting was treated throughout. Perfect homage.
[quote]
wouldn't be a Spielberg movie without that ending... he just can't help himself or his focus groups can't... but it doesn't really detract that much I reckon as its a feel good heart string puller the whole way through

I watched Battle For Terra on Saturday whilst feeling sorry for my head and stomach due to someone making me drink too much *shakes fist*... its well cool... then I re-watched Boy and really enjoyed that too
[quote]
I haven't seen Boy yet, but the director just finished raising enough money, through donations, to be able to release it in the states.

amusing and cool to see various relatives of Michael Jackon's and his fanclub getting behind it too

I read that too. I wasn't in NZ when this was released so didn't really know much about it. He seems to be doing ok in the states now, and funny he was in Green Lantern.

Some of his website feels very braggy though, and name dropping.

also kinda reinforces his part in the film - the bragging bullshitting dad... Paul Holmes would call him a cheeky darkie... I think he's a funny cunt
