Hard Candy - had heard it was good, never even researched what this movie was about, just hired and watched... ...lordy...rather disturbing to say the least! Juno's Ellen Page is fucking awesome! Great cinematography, great acting, but yeah, disturbing premise (pedophilia if anyone is wondering)

Grave of The Fireflies - Japanamation tradegy about a young lad and his sisters stuggle to survive in World War II Japan. It was good, I think, rather draining and depressing, but an interesting story...not one, like say Spirited Away of Howls Moving Castle, that you could watch a few times...once is more than enough!

Monsters Vs Aliens.... SUCKED. So hard, there was maybe 2-3 laughs in the whole movie, the characters seemed extremely contrived and the plot was awful.

An old doco on Arnie and other body builders and their passion and building up to competitions like Mr Olympia. Interesting, but only got halfway through, was interrupted, will have to pick up the rest tonight.

In Bruges - Great rainy day film. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll say "fooking coont" lots aftewards. Great movie.

Death Race - you get what you ask for. Violence and cars and guns. Top notch.

Slumdog Millionaire - its good but seriously is it really THAT good? This movie almost went "straight to video" and I can see why. I think its success comes from great PR, political correctness and middleclass guilt more than anything. Dont understand how it cleaned up so thoroughly at the Oscars except that it probably became trendy to like it. Maybe Im just a coont. Again..I liked it.

wtf?! Slumdog had a brilliant script, the acting was convincing and natural, the pace and flow was awesome. It thoroughly deserved all the praise it got.

Oh yeah, and the colour gradient was spectacular! Completely made the film

a) I think you're misunderstanding what I mean. I liked the way the movie went from intense moments to more subdued moments and back again etc. That's not really 'editing' is it?

b) I never said it's not important. I just said it's not as important that it's done to a higher standard than other films, compared to the likes of acting or writing.

Maybe it was because it was 3D or because I took my 10 year old nephew who loved it, but I totally enjoyed it.

I agree with your observations about character and plot but for a lighthearted kids film it ticked the box (and 3D was pretty cool...). Seth Rogan's comedy can be hit and miss, but B.O.B was pretty funny

I didn't like last years winner (No Country For Old Men)...it was a story that was trying to be "real", but I thought it was totally unbelievable, slow, dull and downright boring. Javier was OK, but the rest of it was slop!

Notorious- Saw this last night, pretty much what I expected, commendable if a little unspectacular.

Niggled me a bit that the dude playing Biggie sounded nothing like him when rapping, otherwise he's a great likeness.

I agree with Slumdog not being THAT great. I mean it was good, but it wasn't THAT good.

Another movie that was not so great but everyone raved about was 'Australia'. Goddamn I hate Nicole Kidman.

back on topic. Watched Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow for the first time the other day and quite enjoyed it. Took a bit getting used to the Noir style but yeah worth watching.

OH! I thought the critics raved about it. Personally I thought it was shit and had to turn it off half way through last night because Nicole was having fits every time Nicole Kidman opened her mouth.

I think i got 20 mins through Australia. I love Hugh Jackman but i'd rather stare at a picture of him for 2 hours than sit through that movie.

Watched last night "Jean de Florette" & "Manon des sources"..

had been wanting to watch these films for some time now and wasn't disappointed, excellent films! highly recommend them, but you have to watch both for full effect.

Definitely in my top 10 foreign films list.

How was the off-line editing?

Well we watched Australia on the weekend, and I have to say, it was a lot better than I thought it was going to be! Low expecations sometimes a good thing, eh?

Nicole was bland, the first twenty minutes was almost comical in some ways so I felt it was a little hard to get into it because of that...but once it got going, I actually really enjoyed it. Nic was just Nic, Hugh was just Hugh, neither were anything special, direction was lacking, but visually, it was pretty solid and the kid who played Nulla was wicked, totally stole the show! Was quite touching by the end and was great to see the bad guy finally get his comeuppance.

Far from the "Gone With The Wind" period drama epic Baz was aiming for, but still worth a watch I reckon.

NCFOM is probably the best film I've seen in recent years. Every aspect of that film is brilliant.

Don't recall saying I "hated it", just didn't enjoy it, didn't think it was as amazing as every else seems to think it is.

Mostly it pissed me off that he went back to the scene after finding the money...sorry, but yeah fucking right anyone would do that...money, run...found it hard to get into it from there...it was slow and dull and boring and didn't have any great cinematography or scoring or nothing. :yawn:

Not a movie but.....A friend gave me 3 seasons of 'Deadwood' on the weekend. Almost through season one and I gotta say its really really fucking good.... the writing is incredible.... apparently it aired here for a while but was discontinued, well worth a watch tho.

I watched Dean Spanley for the first time and thought that was pretty good too, few kiwis in the mix and the screenplay seemed extremely well put together... The sound was average to say the least, but it was a quaint movie so perhaps thats what the plan was

Thought it was really good, but a little bit grim. I thought it was kinda odd that the protagonist spoke Cantonese while almost everyone around him spoke back in Mandarin, most others probably wouldn't pick it up. I really enjoyed the parallel subplot. Narrative and cinematography were fantastic, as was the soundtrack and use of colour. Everything set the mood really well. The actors are good, and the protagonist, is somewhat morally questionable which I liked, as I like my films a bit dark.

4 stars out of 5.

Last film I saw was 'The Class', the opening night film of this years World Cinema Showcase. Palme d'or winner last year, it's based on a real teachers (he acts in this movie playing a similar version to himself) experiences teaching a varied bunch of mixed ethnicity children in France. I really enjoyed it. 2hours and very very talky, but incredibly interesting with the way the children interact and feed off each other yet frustrating at the same time as you just want them to.listen.to.the.goddamn.teacher. It's not totally one sided though, as much as the teacher tries to integrate the ethnic backgrounds of the children he ends up getting frustrated and makes a couple of ethically questionable statements.

Really makes you think about the teacher/student interplay. 8/10

Slumdog i thought was really good - possibly the best feelgood movie i recall.
The Reader: Really liked this, although a lot of reviews see it as quite avg and the moral questions perverse. Was really drawn into it. I like tragedy.
The Secret Life of Bees: Nice. Not great.
I avoided the Notorious BIG movie because so many reviews described it as very average.
Once Upon a Time in the West (classic Western): Very slow, very hard to follow.
Zac and Miri Make a Porno: Ok, better than Seth Rogens other crap.

My 5 year old saw it today and thought it was funny she has super bad taste in movies though.

Scarface...watched it for the first time two weeks ago and was totally capitvated by Pacino from start to finish. It's quite a long film but loved it so much I watched it a 2nd time with director's commentary straight afterwards. Best drug movie I've seen by a mile.
