The lyrics are no worse than this either:

Hello, hello, baby, you called?
I can't hear a thing
I have got no service
In the club, you say? say?
Wha-wha-what did you say, huh?
You're breakin' up on me
Sorry I cannot hear you
I'm kinda busy
Kinda busy
Kinda busy
Sorry I cannot hear you I'm kinda busy

Just a second
It's my favorite song they're gonna play
And I cannot text you with a drink in my hand, eh?
You should've made some plans with me
You knew that I was free
And now you won't stop calling me
I'm kinda busy

[Pre-Chorus]
Stop callin'
Stop callin'
I don't wanna think anymore
I left my head and my heart on the dancefloor
Stop callin'
Stop callin'
I don't wanna talk anymore
I left my head and my heart on the dancefloor

[Chorus]
Stop telephonin' me
(Stop telephonin' me)
I'm busy
(I'm busy)
Stop telephonin' me
(Stop telephonin' me)
Can call all you want but there's no one home
And you're not gonna reach my telephone
Out in the club
And I'm sipping that bubb
And you're not gonna reach my telephone
Call all you want, but there's no one home
And you're not gonna reach my telephone
Out in the club
And I'm sipping that bubb
And you're not gonna reach my telephone

[Beyonce]
Boy, the way you blowing up my phone
Won't make me leave no faster
Put my coat on faster
Leave my girls no faster
I should've left my phone at home
'Cause this is a disaster
Calling like a collector
Sorry, I cannot answer

[Lady Gaga]
Not that I don't like you
I'm just at a party
And I am sick and tired of my phone r-ringing

[Beyonce]
Sometimes I feel like I live in grand central station
Tonight I'm not takin' no calls
'Cause I'll be dancin'
I'll be dancin'
I'll be dancin'
Tonight I'm not takin' no calls
'Cause I'll be dancin'

[Pre-Chorus x2]

[Chorus]

[x3]
My telephone
Ma ma ma telephone
'Cause I'm out in the club
And I'm sippin that bubb
And you're not gonna reach my telephone

(We're sorry, we're sorry
The number you have reached
Is not in service at this time
Please check the number, or try your call again)

Not really a surprise when you see the songs that reached number 1 here but nowhere else... International stuff I mean, rather than local which is obviously going to chart higher here. Either we have terrible taste as a nation or it's much easier for record companies to buy up the required units to push something to number 1 (I think 1000 units can get you a number 1 here)... Probably both.

The Edge >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> daylight >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ZM

Polly and Grant in the morning are the most sickening pieces of shit on the radio. Grant has completely emasculated himself, they constantly talk about superstitious crap like psychics and astrology. They're vomit inducing. And then they have Flinny and Jay on in the afternoon to compete with The Edge and they're about as funny as your grandmother dying of cancer. Plus ZM pitch up their music which is both puzzling and annoying.

Admittedly the morning crew on The Edge aren't *amazing*, but their games are funnier and they're much less annoying. But Fletch & Vaughan in the afternoons are hilarious. Once you get past their nasal voices they're the funniest people I've heard on the radio anywhere.

But still, neither station has the song on rotation as far as I can ascertain. Definitely not The Edge.

[quote]
we actually have great taste as a nation... imo... however when it comes to shite its still going to float if it ticks the boxes of radio/tv/media as Ms Black does

We're a small marketplace so songs can chart here quickly and cheaply compared to the major markets that require a lot of time and effort on the setting up of a record (at radio et al)...

our marketplace and media environment is vastly different to that of Australia - for a state they have states/territories which all operate slightly differently to the other... we have a big telco lead market, they don't... we have jason gunn... the don't etc etc

I don't think its shit... but then my taste is often at odds with biggies Smile

but my point isn't about the quality of the song, a subjective as that is, rather does it tick the boxes to make a hit single - little of which has anything to do with the merit artistic or otherwise of the song

really depends on whether you're the sort of person who actually 'listens' to lyrics when a song is playing. I don't really 'listen' to lyrics, I more listen to the music and the voice.....without paying attention to the actual words being sung

Let's take Rammstein. Most people on here wouldn't have a fucken clue what they're singing about - for all we know they could be singing the same lyrics as Rebecca Black's Friday song - but with an angry vibe! But lots of people still love Rammstein.........because most listeners don't actually 'listen' to the lyrics, they just like the general 'feel' of the song........

I don't mind the song - it's no worse than BEP, Bieber etc.........who I don't particularly like but then I don't dislike them perse......

Perhaps not, but I really can't hear much difference between that and just about everything else that is popular. Not that I have sat there and listened to it more than once. Just sounded like another generic poppy song but a bit more obvious.

Bloody hell neil, you're generalising a bit there. As you know biggie is just a good place to push a particular position. Whether or not it fully reflects any of my real views... well... sort of... but not all the time and not usually as extreme as I put forward.

But y'know, in certain matters if you have no other intel and you need to pick a side, the opposite of what is popular usually works well :p

'Pop' haters are so fucking tiresome.

In the last 45min on The Edge there has been:
Foo Fighters
Kids of 88
Lupe Fiasco
Mumford & Sons

Modest Mouse is even their backing tune atm.

Generalise pop music at your own peril - there is *so* much good stuff around. Granted there is a lot of stuff that's harder to stomach, but NONE of it, I repeat NONE of it, is as bad as this Rebecca Black bullshit. And if you think it is, then all you're showing is that you don't listen to any pop.

Shocking news I'm sure.

#Now Playing - Supergroove - Sittin inside my head (my fav NZ tune of all time)

Current tunes up for top 20 voting on The Edge

Thirsty Merc - Tommy & Krista [Essentially an 80s folk/rock/pop ripoff, think Adams or Cougar-M]
Six60 - Rise up 2.0 [Kiwi tunage - soul/DnB vibe]
Rihanna feat. David Guetta - Who's That Chick? [dance pop - fairly gash]
Taylor Swift - Back to December [hate TS personally, but she's got a lot more substance than most tweenies]
Chris Brown - Yeah 3x [CB needs a bullet for both personal actions & this song]
Tinnie Tempah - Invincible [next big UK pop/hip hop artist, fairly big tune]
Usher - More [dance pop - personally don't like that Usher has gone in this direction but this tune is pretty deace]
Katy Perry - E.T [weird tune, slightly ripped off of Veronicas, now has 'remix' w/ Kanye, bit average but big production values]
Avril Lavigne - What the Hell [annoying but VERY catchy, way more catchy than Black, Lavigne writes for a lot of pop starlets]
Panic At The Disco - The Ballad of Mona Lisa ['Vegas rock' as they say, catchy, fairly interesting lyrically]
Ceelo - Bright Lights, Bigger City [awesome tune (if a little unoriginal), awesome artist]
Ke$ha - Blow [Ke$ha fights the tween fight in a much more interesting way than most]
Pink - Perfect [Pink's worst song in years. Manufactured nonsense]
Alexis Jordan - Happiness [Signed by Jigga & produced by Deadmau5, great voice, great production]
Rihanna - S & M [cheesy dance pop but pretty huge & catchy - plus awesome lyrics heh]
Enrique Iglesias - Tonight im loving you [original version is 'Tonight I'm FUCKING you' haha]
Jessie J - Do it Like a Dude [very poppy but on a dancehall tip, Jessie J has one of the best voices in pop right now]
Kanye West - All of the Lights [EPIC TUNE!, nuff said]
Ivy Lies - HIghway [haven't heard it, hate angsty girl rock personally]
Jessie J feat B.O.B - Price Tag [2 songs in the top 20 atm, but this one sucks a bit, fits her character though]
Diddy, Dirty, Money - Coming Home [Ok tune, sounds like a Kanye rip off]
Avalanche City - Love, Love, Love [cute acoustic Kiwi tune, current TV2 theme]
Mumford & Sons - The Cave [Mumford & Sons one of the biggest acts in the world outside the US right now, great tune, great lyrics etc]
Lady Gaga - Born this way [One of Gaga's best offerings IMO, bit manufactured lyrics-wise but again seems to fit her character]
The Early Birds - Truth [haven't heard it or don't recall it]
Ladi 6 - Like Water [Lady 6's attempt at a breakthrough, funky little number in the mould of Duffy I suppose]
Bruno Mars - The Lazy Song [shit song - probably the CLOSEST to Rebecca Black in this list. Dude still has a *cracking* voice though]
Wiz Khalifa - Black and Yellow [southern hip hop, would've been a hit 10yrs ago probably]
Vince Harder - I Want This Forever [bad NZ take on current dance-pop fad]
Stan Walker - One Thing [Stan's talent is undeniable - not his best tune though]
The Black Eyed Peas - Just Can't Get Enough [HATE the BEP, but this song isn't *as* annoying as their other recent tripe]
Jay Sean & Lil Wayne - Hit the Lights [dance-pop, very generic]
LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem [dance pop - these guys make similar stuff to BEP but usually seems a bit more electro/interesting]
Thirsty Merc - All My Life [folk/pop/rock, cheesy lyrics, not too detestable on the whole though]
Taylor Swift - Story of Us [see earlier comment on TS]
Britney Spears - Till the World Ends [Britney making an embarrassing comeback, shock horror]
JLo & Pitbull - Get on the Floor [J-Lo dance-pop, pretty shit but seems popular]
K-One feat J Williams - She's a Killer [don't know it, Kiwi tune though oibviously]
Eliza Doolittle - Mr Medicine [Lilly Allen rip off, but without the funny or offensiveness]
The Foo Fighters - Rope [new FF tune, quite good]
Lupe Fiasco - The Show Goes On [pretty dope offering from Lupe, best tune on the album unfortunately]
David Guetta feat Snoop Dogg - Sweat [haven't heard full song, see Air NZ thread for thoughts on SNoop these days]
Chris Brown-Beautiful People [better than other song, produced by Benny Benassi, still hate CB though]
Selena Gomez - Who Said? [just listened to this, has serious competition for Rebecca Black terribleness hahaha]
Far East Movement feat Snoop - If I Was You (OMG) [very weird and quite electronic tune]

and here we go... people in it for a laugh could really destroy my argument/credibility:

Rebecca Black - Friday rounds up that 40 odd tunes... Will see how it goes! Currently not in rotation thank fuck. None the less my point is that whilst, yes, there is loads of crap, there is also lots of good music amongst it.

perhaps I should have used the term tween

Pop - catchy songs that are popular... I'm not tarring any 'pop' genre, I love pop (hate pap)... which doesn't fall into any set commercial mould rather it comes from many

Black is a cheaper model of many pop stars that came before - she represents a possible new model - cheap, cheerful and very sucessful... with fewer gate keepers (quality controllers)...

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

"Lyrics these days" - a generalisation in no way representative of the whole, not even close. See above list for reference. If 'there's far worse out there' then name some. People bring up anomalies and exceptions and claiming they're the rule. So lame.

i really don't get how anyone can argue something like Ke$ha - Blow, which was the first i checked from the list above and something i've never heard before, can be better just because the $ spent on production is more. So they have the guy from Dawson's Creek in the video, omg! it's proper shit!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFWX0hWCbng

It's been mentioned already but the tween market is not for us...But from where i stand I find Blacks track just as, if not more, catchy as Blow, which uses the same template of repeat one word and use auto tune. Defend away..

I'm interested though on whether anyone can pinpoint for me the moment when so much commercial pop/rnb turned into electro-housish dance beats with auto tune vocals, and usually some sort of guest rap? Having been blissfully ignorant of pop music for a couple of years and then recently forced into listening to large amounts of commercial radio this sort of stuff seems to be everywhere now. Is there any way I can blame it on Axwell and Steve Angello? Is t-pain partially responsible?

No doubting Ke$ha has shite lyrics, they've contrived and poppy - but they're not *incessantly mundane* like RB. I don't like Blow, but it's not even in the same league as Friday. If Friday were 'just the norm' or 'like every other pop artist' like some are suggesting, then why the hell has it inspired so much vitriol, hatred and news? It's certainly not because people like it. Fact is we live in an age of electronic music where the lyrics aren't as necessary for someone to get into a tune - but when you make a song that has lyrics as the focus, and they're about as simple, unpoetic, mundane and annoying as the English language can be, you're going to get hate.

There's not a single redeeming feature about that song, even in the cheesiest pop context.

Very Happy

Jesus Christ that was awful. Would you break my heart agaaaain?

quote:
And who said the Internet never broke a star?

This is what the Black Eyed Peas have wrought. After songs with inane lyrics like "My Humps" and "Boom Boom Pow" is it any wonder that Rebecca Black's trifle is a YouTube sensation?

Oh, don't focus on the barely literate lyrics. We've been pandering this crap for a decade and now we're surprised the public buys it?

And the de rigueur rapper.

And the music video.

This is just the logical conclusion to where the major labels and radio have led us. And you wonder why both are dying.

You can't have it both ways.

You can't sell crap and then get pissed when someone creates same and profits from it.

So we've finally reached that crossroads where real artists and "stars" part ways.

Isn't it interesting. The so-called "stars" of today are all over the gossip blogs, even the mainstream press is infatuated. It's a simple story. Take good-looking kid and music industry and radio consensus and everybody gets on the bandwagon to sell this worthless product. Which is why most Top Forty acts can barely play clubs. Or if you have fame, your "career" arc is very brief.

And "American Idol" is no better. Just because Jimmy Iovine worked with the Boss and Dr. Dre that does not make the contestants deserving of anyone's attention. And trotting out all those "producers". Used to be artists fought to produce their own records, now they can't wait to sign up with the major label and get made over by the usual suspects, who do the same for every pretty face, just like Ark Factory.

I think it's funny. I think if you dig down too deep you're missing the point.

It does not matter exactly why this video caught fire. That's what happens online. There's a constant flow of overnight sensations, train-wrecks we watch, discuss for a nanosecond and then move on from.

Like I said, don't confuse this with artistry.

And unlike in the old days, something can reach everybody in a day or two. Gatekeepers are irrelevant. The public spreads the news.

But do you research that accident you saw on the freeway? No, you focus and forget.

What we've got now is the dying gasp of the old media. Not only music, but news too. Otherwise, how in the hell could Kim Kardashian be such a star? The mainstream media was complicit, otherwise no one would pay attention, not for long.

And I'm not saying these nitwits will never rise to the surface.

But I am saying that they'll constitute ever less of the music business money.

Come on. Everyone's got the software. The tracks on the radio feature auto-tune and you want to beat up this little girl with rich parents miming the concoction of bottom feeders?

Little kids like seeing people their own age.

Little kids want to believe they too can be stars. That if they met Rebecca Black, their life would work. It's about the fantasy.

It's not about the music.

But the music is not that far different from what the big boys are selling.

So why are they complaining?

And why are you complaining?

We no longer live in one homogeneously controlled landscape. The fact that you hate crap is not so significant. It's about what your peers like.

And if you're over twenty and your peers are interested in Rebecca Black, you must be a pedophile.

Rebecca Black will go back to middle school.

In college, people will laugh at her fleeting fame.

To believe she's a star is to believe the cast members of the "Real World" have lasting talent.

Move right along folks, there's nothing here of interest. Real music requires inspiration and dedication and tons of practice and it lasts.

Unlike "Friday".

WOW - you are doing a lot of defending of the Edge lol - I like listening to ZM and yet you don't see me jumping up and down at your comment about them being vomit inducing lol

Where's that from... stupid article.

Oh, thanks for telling me not to take it seriously, not to confuse it with artistry, that she's not a star, that she won't be famous, and that real music requires talent.

Enlightening stuff.

Oh I do find it fascinating. I love pop culture (obviously), but think the message is very confused here. This song has been noticed *because* it was bad... unbearable. It was passed around and became a huge viral success because of it's supreme cringe factor (which again, says a lot about it in the current musical climate). As I've said a few times in this thread, if you think this compares to 99% of the music on the radio these days, it just shows you don't actually listen to it.

WTF are you on about? Jump up and down all you like?

What you quoted there was not actually about the Edge at all - it was a brief bit about the tunes because it's painfully obvious that most of the people commenting on pop music don't actually listen to any. My hatred of ZM isn't about the music (although it annoys me that they speed it all up), it's about their DJs. In particular the nauseatingly lame Polly and Grant, and their attempt at having 'funny' guys on in the arvo up against Fletch & Vaughan. Jay and Flynny are about as funny as Rebecca Black is a good singer.

my interest surpasses that of the song itself - I really couldn't care less for how it sounds, what she looks like or what radio station plays it

radio is a side issue (refer to gatekeepers) and one that is increasingly irrelevant when it comes to popular culture, I barely listen to the radio, fuck that... same reason I hardly ever watch TV - fucked if I'm going to sit and let some marketing lead focus groups dictate what and when I'll see and hear anything, that shhit is so last century - I've a apple music playing device, I have the internet, I have choices and exercise them

I think there is far more to this than a bunch of post 25 year olds opinions on the music (and singer) itself... their opinions are not important unless they have something intelligent to say - just repeating the song is shit is not intelligent.... its tired, worn out and redundant (though can be amusing)

Thats your opinion.... personally I don't like listening to the Edge at all, not my cup of tea. You state it like its fact when quite frankly it is just your opinion.
