"They are raping on a massive scale," Frances Lovemore, a counsellor at the Harare-based Amani Trust, which monitors torture, told the newspaper. "Girls as young as 12 or 13 are being systematically taken and used and abused because of their families' political views."

Victims in hiding related how they had been gang-raped by police and war veterans and had their genitals burnt with iron rods. They said they had been abused in revenge for their parents not supporting Mugabe in the March presidential poll.

I mean I agree totally that Mugabe is a total megalomaniac but it just makes it seem even more unjust when the so called peace/justice loving powers of the west are not willing to step in to help like they were so eager to do in Afghanistan for example (where they did infact want to secure an oil pipeline).

maybe get the army to drive the white farmers out if they refuse to move but using terror tactics like rape.......it doesn't help Mugabe or his country in the long run.

virgo1: The whole argument has to do with Mugabe retaining power. And he is doing this through scare tactics. These rapes are committed on members of family members that don't support Mugabe or have campaigned against him.

The other thing with driving the white farmers off the land, is that nobody is farming this land now and Zimbabwe is going into a major food shortage crisis. The other thing is many of these farmers have large mortgages, which they are no longer going to be able to pay back, so the countrys banks are porbably going to be fucked as a result.

The use of rape as a terror tactic is about making sure he gets voted back in every election.

These rapes and land theft might be bad, but it's not enough to justify external military action. Now if Mugabe started killing the white farmers (ethnic cleansing?) then it would be a whole 'nother story and I wouldn't be surprised to see some kind of international intervention.

oh and yeah I know that the primary reason for attacking Afghanistan was for revenge upon Al Queda and their Taliban allies but I can't believe there weren't any other "good" reason for America to be in Afghanistan.

Rape is part of any war. Mugabe is effectively staging a civil war/dictatorship in his own country. Both lead to things like rape.

The white farmers who stayed were the ones prepared to try and help zimbabwe be succesful. Their loyalty to the country has been treated with contempt by mugabe.

Do u wanna know the sad thing (coming from Africa myself) Mugabe is doing it to his OWN people - not just to the caucasion minority, it is sad to hear about his cruel intenstions - although it is destroying his country, he is destroying the ppl that live there. Also the african majority even though they r suffering - they FOUGHT (bush war) for the government that they have now, so what ever happens is partly their fault! I know it is wrong to say - but if u knew the history of africa - u would understand!!!

Mugabe is in due to dodgy tactics now. Sure he may have been voted in legitinately in the past, but he was a different man then. Blaming the people who voted for him in the past for the way he is now is not fair at all. He is now a dictator who even his own people don't want in power.
