Hey.. aren't we all guilty of stereotyping? It's quite natural isn't it... arab taxi drivers, indian dairy owners, asian take away shop owners, violent polynesians....but then there are too many white people to stereotype. Apparently rascism comes into the equation where people get personally offended and hurt by stereotypes, like when people tell asians to "fuck off and go home" even though they may be 3rd-generation kiwis who came over to be farmers in the Waikato. Is that what rascism is? Where does it end and where does it begin? Isn't rascism relative to society standards anyway, as in the extremists who don't fit in with the socially-accepted norm? In that way most of us aren't.

Anyways, cricket well we don't NEED cricket but i for one sure as hell REALLY REALLY WANT cricket to watch, talk about and play.

I think as a whole New Zealanders definitely can be racist at times although we certainly aren't the worst at it. Luckily we aren't big on hate crimes against blacks or jews like in the States or Europe and we certainly aren't as racist as some Australians are towards Aborigines or any non white person for that matter.

I tend to find that it's a bit harder to be racist against or discriminate against a racial group when you have a lot of friends or aquaintances who belong to that group. i.e I used to play rugby with a lot of polynesian guys and get on really well with them as a result. I know a lot of polynesian guys now as people not as a particular racial group.

Just a thought any way.

To be totally honest the vast majority of racial slurs and racist action I have seen in NZ have come from a member of a minority racial group...

*agrees with trapper

I have been the victim of reverse racism on
more occaisions than i care to remember.

funny thing is, it all stops when they find out I am
part Maori.

yes, and yes.

Racism is far more than what people say though. That form of racism is the most obvious and so what most people notice. The real racism in our country is not spoken about, its people not getting jobs/flats etc becuase of the colour of their skin. Many people are so used to low-level racism they stop even noticing it after a while, probably a sensible survival policy.

rah rah rah... reverse racism... wank wank wank

yes of course new zealand is racist, and yes it works both ways, i realise that there is some reverse racism, but to imply that its more prevalent than 'traditional' racism is blindly ignorant.

new zealanders like to think they aren't racist, but in actual fact they are in denial...

and damien; i have had much the same experience as you but the inverse... i look white so i meet white people who choose to share their innately racist opinions with me on the plight and social standings of maori, but when they find out that i am part maori they backtrack , and try and cover their tracks... pretending they're not racist.

i tell you this much though, being in australia has opened new avenues of racial issue for me... a lot of people here think i'm a "wog" (notice the quotations, i use this for lack of a better term.. hope it doesn't offend anyone)... you get treated very differently here, just by having olive skin )maybe the earrings and necklace have something to do with it also), but someone even tried to pick a fight with me coz they said i was trying to look tough... (ffs i was eating an icecream)...

anyways... rant rant rant... sorry... new zealanders ARE racist, both reverse and normal... its a fact. they just don't like to admit it, they cover everything up in a wet blanket, PC society...

and YES WE NEED FUCKEN CRICKET YOU MONKEY!

:p

Would saying that asians cant drive as well as others (as a generalisation) be racist?

How about pacific island culture is more violent than the norm?
[quote]
Watch 'rush hour' or 'rush hour 2' and see what a non-PC, non-racist world would be like. Both of them are filled with 'racial slurs' and 'racial stereotyping' but there’s not a hint of racism.

People have got to start getting over themselves... it seams like the whole world is just looking for an excuse to scream RACISM!!!
[quote]
No they're not. Racists are screaming, I'm not a racist.
[quote]
Is saying that you dont like pacific islander because their culture is violent racist?
