how do you make a dialup coonection stop disconnecting if you've been idle for a while?

Really annoying when downloading songs and you go away for a while. Just can't find the right preferences/options box. Anyone help?

Depends on your ISP and Operating system. I know xtra used to force disconnections after a while but don't know if they do anymore. Try going into the properties of your dial up connection and looking at options.

Just as annoying is when the computer decides to dial up when you havent asked it to.

Also, in Outlook Express (I have Outlook though, and am still getting aquainted with that, but I think it has the same problem), there is an option thats says if its not online, dont connect when it goes to check email... I had this option on... but do ya think it worked??? No.

or use GetRight. Software allows you to stop and restart downloads. Plus if you disconnect, it will reconnent to the ISP, and then start downloading the file again. Its great for those massive dance sets which take years to download Wink

Whats the point of that. They would be out of date by the time you got them Smile

my problem's the opposite - i set it to disconnect if idle for x amount of time, and it doesn't fucking work, it just stays connected forever.

eight: yeah, you've probably got something in the background keeping the connection alive, e.g. MSN or ICQ. Or perhaps an e-mail program, or a file sharing program such as Morpheus, KaZaA or Audiogalaxy. All of those send adn recieve status packets, I think, which can stop a connection from ever being "idle" long enough.
