As for the pop idol one I kind of liked/understood that in order to tell that particular story within 40 odd minutes of tv the bigger details of how, why etc had to be left aside. I kind of thought all the cycling might be a power generation scheme.. Reminded me a little bit of Paolo Bacigalupi's great sci fi novel "the windup girl" where oil/other traditional forms of energy have been exhausted so power is generated by people/animals pushing power into coil springs (through cycling etc) which are used to power things.

Besides which, most people today spend their life on pointless busy work while being entertained by screens anyhow so it didn't seem too far fetched to me.

I also thought the cycles were for power generation, logical - kinda a live pro-cycling version of the matrix, saves on all that virtual/real wank.. still would have liked to know more - ie was that a picture of bush at the end or an actual window etc. (perhasp humans opted out of real world living in favour of allowing the planet to live)

Yeah it's still pretty bogus, but it's the only one that really gets in the ballpark of how a good poker player would actually be thinking, and the life associated with underground grinding etc. Every other movie has just been like "zomg you have a straight flush? Yeah grabbed the first two eps and watched the first so far... Pretttty, pretttty pretttty average. But then nearly all animated shows are terrible at first before they really find their feet, so I may give it a few just to be sure.

good pont re findign their feet - but most shows have to build the characters and setting, which takes time, but with ND thats all done if you've seen the movie and where that was fresh and amusing this is simply mining badly the material that was starring them in the face

Finally finished Homeland too. That program was excellent! bit of an annoying end though with Carrie getting so close to breaking the case.

I got a few into it, was planning on keeping up but things have prevented that so far. I thought it was OK, reasonably interesting premise.

I gave it 5 eps, hated it. Awesome premise, terrible execution.

Watched first ep of New Girl last night. Jess is quite quirky and weirder than I thought she would be which I struggled with a bit, but I definitely think the show has potential. Some of the bits where she breaks into song were pretty hilarious. As a true Zooey fangirl, m going to stick with it.

I feel like I understand about 40% of what is going on in this show. I think I'm enjoying it. Will stick with it anyway - since David Milch did the actual best tv show ever I'm inclined to keep at it. Hard to buy Larry's cousin from Curb in any other role though.

The purpose of the scene with Rick shooting the two interlopers was showing us how he's now learnt exactly why Hershel wants them to get the fuck out. Laying it on a bit thick sure, but there we go.

I totally dug the final scene, tense showdown like an old western where the characters talk around what they're really saying and everybody knows it. But yeah what the fuck you stupid fucking cunt Lori, even for a horror show - that was fucking dumb and it's shit like that, that make it so hard to empathise with the characters.

After totally getting over Mad Men ages ago, I got back into it recently, so I'm super excited for the new season. It got SO GOOD. GoT should hurry up also.

I tried watching the first ep of Boss, but I wasn't in the mood and it seemed a bit samesame. Not really feeling watching another show about a guy having problems keeping things together.

I wish they would bring out an Entourage type drama/comedy. Something set in LA. Maybe I will just watch s2 of Californication instead.

Just started the other day - fucking genius About a obnoxious small-town guy who became a Major League baseball player then turned to shit and is now returning to his home-town to mixed reception. Frequent hilarious one-liners, some genuine character development.. love it.

If anyone is wanting a good filler show in between seasons, revenge is ok. Nothing spectacular in the writing, but simple and exciting enough to want to keep watching the whole season.

Last night was awesome, triumphant return of Ashley Schaeffer!

Luck still really interesting - after a few episodes where I have NO IDEA what's going on, it's all becoming clear now, and starting to make sense. The big race last week where Nick Nolte's horse won was beautifully shot, and really showed what the attraction is. And also how can you not like a show where Michael Gambon shows up as a total utter badass.

Love this show, terribly b grade and filled to the brim with botox actors with no facial expressions but it's pretty awesome :>

I'm really enjoying it too Kris - the horse racing sequences are ace which I'm impressed by as I have little to no interest in it IRL. Still piecing things together, it's hard to work out what escalante's deal is in particular. Great show, possibly fated to be a critics fave rather than true blood or game of thrones crossover hit.

Yeah, that big one I mentioned was SO well done, showing *everyone* really getting into it, you could feel their passion for the sport - even when it wasn't even their horse! Showed WHY they love the sport so much. Edit: Also seeing that amazing performance is what drove Marcus and the other Foray guys to go rescue Jimmy from the private game. It revitalised them. Even cool-as-a-cucumber Ace was excited! Also this weeks race with the horse shoe flying off, that was well done too.

I don't have much love for it IRL either, but in saying that, it can be a great day out. Dress up a bit, sink some piss, have a flutter, and hopefully win. Edit2: then get *really* pissed and try and score some hottie in a fancy frock. Good times.

I think Escalante is mostly just a greedy hustler - remains to be seen if we'll see more of his deeper motivation yet.

Dexter is the only character they put ANY effort into, and it's shown for the last.....4 seasons at least.

Trinity's only redeeming feature was some good dialogue and the fact that John Lithgow is a fucking badman.

I thought Quinn was going to be this really interesting new Doakes, but that was a fail and he just turned out to be a lovesick pussy. I also thought the Chicago dude was going to be a new Doakes, but he's just nothing. I liked Jimmy Smits (is that his name? can't remember) he was an interesting character.

This season was all about Dexter's struggle with religion etc etc the interviews were saying, so I think they focussed on that too much and let all the other characters lapse. I liked Brother Sam's character.
