Well yes they've been around a while so not cutting edge or anything but I borrowed a PS3 over my summer holidays and sussed out quite a bit regarding its operation in the various areas and thought I would say a few things with the purpose of getting others comments.
Firstly I used TVersity as the Media Server as I found the Windows media player server seemed to break a lot. I set up specific areas to share and mainly browsed by folder as this was a familiar organisation of the material on the server though it was kinda interesting using the other methods of classification from media tags. Tversity offers Internet media as well but I couldnt get any of the google or Youtube RSS feeds to work. Anyone done this?
I could stream most movies over the wireless connection getting around 8 MB/s max but some movies still skipped a bit, so if I was setting it up permanently I would definitely use an ethernet cable. Also some file formats didnt play...
I used the Internet browser a bit. After initially being sceptical as it didint fill the screen I found that once I mastered the zoom functions R3 and L2 R2 with left stick to navigate I could easily focus on news articles or pictures. While not recommending it as an advanced browser I found reading the news and weather and watching a few Youtube vids a pretty acceptable experience. Using the triangle button gave a full menu of
browser functions , favourites, history etc. The main bugbear was that it hung the whole machine , hahah just like a PC, when I went to the NZHerald website. Yup had to restart the PS3 everytime I went there lol.
Obviously for video connection I used a HDMI cable but as I wanted to put the audio into the standard amplifier I had to find RCA out. Luckily the PS2 multi audio cable (which I already had ) was compatible.
Blu Ray was awesome. I bought HellBoy and American Psycho BR's and it was very very sharp. Patrick Batemans skin is not perfect even with all that exfoliation, I definitely saw a pimple.
I clocked C,B, and A class in Gran Tourismo : Prologue but found the S class very challenging
Motor Storm was the awesomest new driving game. Lots of fun making the massive leaps around the mesa hills. Just love the slow mo death plays.Didnt play Borderlands or Modern Warfare at all
What else can you do with a PS3?? I am probably going to get one for myself in a month or two.
