I do this a lot, usually via the University of Auckland website.

Currently not working, both via the uni site, and from google.

I'm getting a largly blank white webpage (with a small brand image at the top of the page and item reference numbers - both of which will be in a different format on the actual PDF), occasionally a totally black page.
(I can post a screen shot if someone can tell me how to upload one via photobucket)

I can open existing PDFs saved on my computer no problem

Have just found out the error is only happening in Firefox, not IE

Not sure if I understand your problem, but I vaguely remember being pissed off with the way pdfs are handled in ff.

I went to menu-> options ->applications and where it says Adobe Acrobat in content type (about 3 places) I changed the action to always open in acrobat.

Essentially I told firefox to always open pdf links in acrobat external application. Remember to save as if you want to keep it.

Thanks - that has worked.

I changed the Action on four Content Types from "Use Adobe Acrobat (in firefox)" to "Use Adobe Reader 9.3 (default)"

It now gives me that same blank page i had before, but opens the PDF in a new window. I think previously it opened the PDF in that web page which is now blank (occasionall when saving the PDF i would hit save on the web page rather than on the PDF header). I think ... or something ...

I don't get the blank tab, I think it's because I have Tab Mix Plus Addon installed, and that has an option to prevent blank tabs from opening when downloading files.

You might be able to achieve the same thing playing with about:config but... I dunno how and Tab Mix has a few other decent features.

If you prefer pdf files to open inside the browser you can set the action to use the ff plugin, it's just that it didn't always seem to work. I just quickly googled and someone out there reckoned it can get choppy if you install firefox (like a new version perhaps) after you've already installed acrobat (or reader) and the solution is to reinstall acrobat after ff. *shrug*

External app works for me though.

Codecs for sure.

Install new codecs.

Your old codecs are giving you grief.
