So I know theres some harddrive devices which will copy data off camera memory cards but the ones with screens are $$$$$$$$$$. Anyone have any experience with cheap, non screen'ed ones or think of an alternative to buy 3x32gig memory cards?

When that many 32gb cards is going to cost you towards $400, I'd just grab a netbook for the same amount of money.

Portable, 250gb hard drive, card reader, way more versatile than any dedicated device. Overkill maybe, but much better value.

Carrying it for 6 weeks is not a great option, particularly if it gets stolen.

I used to have a little battery powered device that connected to my old ipod which would copy files off but no feed back on whether it worked or not and no way to view them.

I have an iPod dongle which let you plug your camera in and suck photos off.

You could then review them on the iPod, my one doesn't work with newer iPods though.

Maybe see if there is a new version?

Yes there is but it appears to only work with the iPad.

Obviously I would have suggested that knowing you have an iPad, but since you were talking 32gb memory cards, I thought suggesting a device with 64gb storage MAX was a bit silly.

What Ipod do you have?

The whole idea is not to carry anything large that might need recharging (versus batteries). Its for my mum who is travelling mostly back country in asia for 6 weeks.

I have bought her 3x32 gig memory cards and 2 card readers so hopefully she can swap stuff around should she start running out of room and can find a computer (shes taking an DSLR and a G10).

She has one of those old black and white screen ones.
