And yet the jealousy is so large Lazydog has to start his very OWN Poker Thread to try and claim some of the light from the enlightened ones.

But all he has really accomplished is to double the very nemesis of his life

It has nothing to do with Australias woes, poker is always categorized in "Sport".....and its difficult to argue with that when other ridiculous pursuits/games/hobbies get classified in sports and no one says a dicky bird.

Its intense competition, its professional, its mentally and physically taxing ...... it can easily be classified as "sport"

Darts, outdoor pursuits, video games, chess, spelling bees, even other cards games...all get lumped into sport and no one cares....try do the same thing with poker and people go nuts....its weird

POKER IS GAMBLING
[quote]
Well yeah......I was tempted to blame it on that, but for years NZ's "three main sports" were known as rugby-racing-cricket. Racing exists in the sports section. And really...that whole industry is about the gambol. Its something else.... and all I can think of is when most people 1st heard of "poker", it was all about drunk cowboys in saloon bars, and they cant shake that vision.
[quote]
This old chestnut... Horse racing, darts, snooker etc require some sort of phyical skill or dexterity, whereas poker like chess is 100% mental (or luck if you want to start another argument). That to me is the idfference between a sport and a game.

*Claiming that picking up cards or moving pieces requires physical skill or dexterity is bollocks because being better or worse at has almost no bearing on the game (other than annoying other players if you're really bad at it).
[quote]
No one with clues would claim such a thing Jono

The key to it is..... Poker involved significant physical ENDURANCE, not only that....its all about "the top half". Which is te absolute key difference between winners and also rans in almost all sports. Poker is mental gymnastics, in spades ....Razz

Truth be known…..in vacuum I dont consider poker a sport either, but then again I think anything without a ball is dubious…. and most non-ball sports are essentially races or pastimes. But I take issue when these things are allowed to be called sports, yet poker gets everyones back up. It doesn’t make sense
[quote]
I'm not sure the ability to make decisions after 15 CC & Dries (Drys?) counts as significant physical endurance. Razz

To in the WSOP main event, players are playing like 14 hours a day for 12 days straight.
That's 14 hours of intense focus, calculation, analysing.... It's pretty physically tough Razz
[quote]
There is nothing 'physical' about it. Just because it makes you tired, doesn't mean it's physical. It's mentally draining. I'm on the fence with the whole matter, but claiming it's in any way physical is a joke you tossers!

The line between mental and physical is just more blurred than you are saying.
It is physically taxing. After long sessions I feel physically exhausted, sometimes headachy.. The mental exertion begins to affect you physically. It's completely obvious. Dunno why you'd bother denying it Confused

Don't really care what people call it, but golf is hardly that physical...sure, there's the coordination to hit the ball well, but 95% of the game is mental focus and it's practically zero physical exertion (unless you're that unfit you can't walk a few hundred metres from time to time)

Darts is all hand eye coordination, which is mostly mental over physical, too
[quote]
Personally a sport, for me, must involve some kind of physical dexterity. Thus darts easily falls into that category because it's largely based around fine motor control.

'Physical' effects are different. *Everything* is physically taxing in some form or another, that doesn't make it sport. Work is tiring, having sex is tiring, listening to music for hours on end has physical effects, but it's not *sport*. There is no element of physical dexterity or motor skill.

Hugely, hugely different distinction - and not one that you can weasel out of by saying that it's tiring or has physical effects on the body. Now as I said before, I'm actually on the fence about poker (and chess actually) because I believe they are intensely challenging mentally (often more so than many physical sports), but that element of physically based skill is basically absent.

But WHY does sport have to involve some physical dexterity or strength? Confused Humankind now understand ourselves better and its generally accepted that the mind is much more powerful than the body. Its also true that the difference between champions and the rest is their mental set up. So now we know that mind is more important than muscle, why cling to the notion that muscle must be involved?

Its this line of thinking that leads morons (and there are plenty of them) to decry that “Golf isn’t a sport, because look at the fat bastards who are good at it”

“Sport” does not equal “athletics”. Its more like "competition" (although holes can be picked in that word too)
