in 2005, talking about controls on tobacco:

"Mr Dunne has described the efforts in New Zealand to prevent the sale of tobacco to underage children as ‘fascist’, and tobacco control spending as a ‘scandalous waste of money in pursuit of some health zealots’ beady eyed political correctness.’ Mr Dunne also described the 2003 New Zealand legislation for smokefree bars as ‘extremism’."

in 2011, talking about Kroniq:

" Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne yesterday announced a 12-month ban on 43 legal highs, which will be in force by the end of the week.
Dunne said the Cabinet approved amendments to the Misuse of Drugs Amendment Bill yesterday. The ban would be in place by Friday and products removed from shops ”just over a week later”. Suppliers would be advised to dispose of the drugs before the notice came into force, to avoid stockpiling. “These products change frequently, and new ones are put on the market with a different ingredient or two. We will basically be able to capture them all,” Dunne said."

well, the WIN Party ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WIN_Party ) did form a coalition with United.

election year and they know where the populist votes are to be had cheaply

So what happens if you have heaps of legitimate stock? You just lose it?

Pretty harsh.
[quote]
You'd likely return to supplier for them to refund and dispose of, after selling as much as you can for cheap.

Personal possession is not illegal in the C1 class they are going to put it in (same as BZP).

Sif the supplier would take it back!

Wouldn't it all come from dodgy Chinese backblocks?

current products taken off market to be replaced in hours imo

nothing changed but Pete gets a soundbite

war on drugs won in nz by gravity defying haircut

Guess this falls under collective cabinet responsibility in regards to Dunne's latest statement. Not that he'd argue at all though. He's a government yes man. Anything to keep himself alive. I shan't be voting for him in my electorate.

Sorry, I was referring more to retailers. The wholesalers would have to either destroy, or export to places where it's legal (as happened with BZP).

And yeah, destroying sucks, but in fairness, it's not like these companies aren't making money hand over fist.

To clarify it a bit more, adding to Fishboy's convenient framing...

Seems Dunne has been all over the place since the 90s on it. Regardless, it doesn't mean these current happenings are wrong.

The amendment they are putting through allows them to classify any new compound in the same manner virtually instantly.

Wouldst work for me but unfortunately that's really all that's required to win in Ohariu. Still, not getting my vote. He's a govt tool.

oh - I imagine they'll find something totally different then - its not like Mr Bowden and co haven't faced this problem before, prob has several products ready to go now (??)

Being an advocate for legalisation of ALL "drugs" I am against this measure - though won't be sorry to see the shitty substances off shelves

if only we had someone in govt with the fortitude and balls to demand a open and frank debate on all recreational drugs and their abuse and legal status in our country

needless to say we don't have politicans who would even consider challenging the current status quo
[quote]
Im all for adults being able to buy whatever synthetics or actual substances they want, but Im kinda glad this has happened, simply because most retailers dont give a fuck about selling it to kids. My boy is fifteen and Ive snapped him and his mates with it, and it fucking pissed me off. I dont care what he does when he's older, but while he's still at high school, I dont want him to be able to get it from the kwiky mart down the road from his school (yes this is where they were getting it).

So did you at all read what I said? Because I don't think you did.

I think they should ban Taurine to stop the youth getting out the back.

yes I did - I'm suggesting a new product line that falls outside of the remit of this proposed ban - I can't see anything in the news that suggests this couldn't happen

Check out the Supplementary Order Paper:

http://www.legislation.govt.nz/sop/government/2011/0258/latest/whole.html#dlm3921445

New sections 4C to 4E inserted
• The following sections are inserted after section 4B:
“4C Temporary class drug notice
o “(1) The Minister may, by notice in the Gazette, specify any substance, preparation, mixture, or article as a temporary class drug.

So just by publishing in the Gazette Peter Dunne can ban whatever he likes for a year. Something suspiciously alternative about that Garlic infused lavender wine? WHAMMO! BANNED! Head of Lion-Nathan squeals that the “hemp” beer some dude in Gizzy is selling to the kids at RNV over NYE is hurting his sales? No problems, Peter Dunne can wave the ban stick for him!

No need for anything namby-pamby like evidence or anything like that. King Gerry I of CERRA now has another sovereign with him in cabinet, King Peter I of the war on drugs.

Per what fishboy pasted, it was widely reported in the bits I read/heard/watched/

Can someone convince him to add brostep?

He's a bloody waste of space and as usual our hopeless media are treating the population like mushrooms
[quote]
Looking at the writing of the amendment I get the impression that Peter Dunne can now ban any product sold in shops for up to a year. There is no mention of legal highs or any sort of clarification as to what the amendment covers, Peter Dunne can ban Anchor Milk for up to a year he he buys shares in someone else. An extreme example and never going to happen but this amendment is extremely shoddy and open to abuse.

Just have to pass this under urgency now and we'll be in business!
