So Palm are reported to have "fixed" iTunes sync by changing the Pre so it identifies itself in violation of the USB standard as being an Apple product.

OH LOL LOL PLM, ALL FIXD NOW!

It's interesting - their first release linked to iTunes by fooling it into thinking it was an iPod.
Now it sounds like they've done some other flub after Apple blocked that.

I'm all for someone making those sorts of hacks for open interoperability, but surprised that it's being done openly by the manufacturer.

Oh, and it's PALM complaining about APPLE'S use of the USB standard that I've read.

As far as I can tell originally Palm just identified its self as an iPod made by Palm. Then Apple added a USB Vendor ID check on the mass storage component (this is what Palm is complaining to the USB Implementers Forum about for some reason).

This broke the sync, so with 1.1 Palm changed the USB Vendor ID to 0x05ac (Apple). Now it identies itself as an iPod made by Apple.

Unauthorized use of assigned or unassigned USB Vendor ID Numbers and associated Product ID Numbers are strictly prohibited.

Right, yes it seems tit-for-tat. Apple use the VendorID to lock down access (which is what Palm is complaining about as a misuse of the standard) so Palm use Apple's VendorID (which is clearly off) to get around it.

Palm are being retarded, Apple are being sensible (albeit a little over zealous) in my opinion.

If you want iTunes interoperability pay Apple for it.

Kind of ironic considering the guys who designed the Pre were the two senior guys who developed the iPhone - but walked because they weren't allowed to implement a host of useful features - some of which now are on the Pre (like having multiple applications open at once).
[quote]
To be honest I actually agree with Apple taking their time on the multiple applications at once thing.

Sure, it is a must have feature. But on the other hand the majority of people are too stupid to be trusted with managing open applications. They won't say "oh my iPhone is slow because I have too many applications open", they will say "oh, my iPhone is slow".

It's not like they have forgotten to design it. The OS can do it, they just haven't provided a public API to access the feature.

Sooooo, if you want access to the music stored in your Window's folder, pay MS for it?

Yes yes, OTT. But Apple have a widely-held music storage system, and are actively fucking with the code in it to stop competitors to a different business unit access it. I don't blame Palm for trying to work their way around that

I do see your point.

I think I just object to the technical methods coupled with the Palm media spin.

I've been taking a closer look at the WebOS side of my Palm Pre tonight, and I noticed that it periodically uploads information to Palm, Inc.

The first thing sent is intended to be my GPS location. It's the same location I get if I open the map app on the Pre. Not very accurate in this case, but I've seen it be accurate enough to find my house before.

Here they can tell every WebOS app I use, and for how long.

{ "appid": "com.palm.app.messaging", "event": "close", "timestamp": 1250006446 }

It sends the above info on a daily basis.

Alllllll right!
