Jesus, 20 to 30% increase is a huge jump, did they fcuk up their initial costs big time?
[quote]
Wow thats a big jump, what reason did they give for that?

Aside from the usual 'improving the customer experience' I assume you got.

Looks like you're making an ASS outta U and MEEEEEEE.

They company is losing money to provide service at its current level, my guess is its to be, wait for it... profitable! Shocked

Woodger's 20-30% increase will mostly be based on the overage charge increase.

Overage price has gone up 100%.

I'm checking out slingshot today.. Off-peak free downloads is looking pretty good. Especially considering the plan itself is cheaper than Orcon now.

Tough shit of they are losing money, not Kalibur's problem really is it?

20-30% is a stupid figure.

Our plan was $80, plus $40 for 50gb of data on top of the 15gb base, total $120 for 65gb

It went up to $80, plus $50 for 50gb of data, total $130 for 65gb. Minus the considerable traffic to Biggie since that's now free. That's an increase of only 8.4%.

If you're paying considerable overage charges, you should change your plan. Which is exactly what we did.

We went 25gb over a month ago, incurring extra charges of $25. That would cost us $50 under the new rate, so we've upgraded to a 100gb data add on, which costs $30 more than we were paying. $30 more for 50gb extra. No brainer really.

Of course no one likes a price rise, but we're now mostly happy with our level of service and direct reports from people on other cheaper ISP's that I'm receiving are not favourable.. And as illustrated, if you're paying 20-30% more, there's something very wrong.

and clearly losing customers at it's new level.

Orcon have decided to raise margins and lose some customers in the process. Standard price setting behaviour really - I wonder if they're consciously looking to force out the higher-use customers because they'd rather not deal with them?

Yup.

And what kris_b said.

Sounds a little better

Surprisded they didn't hide the price increases in an overhaul in plan make up, thats a common tactic.

You actually have to respect them for being upfront about it instead of doing it underhandedly like that innit.

yeah that's cool, but this whole O zone thing sounds dodgy...

ISP's shouldn't be giving preferential service to specific websites. why should competing websites have to suffer just because of the ISP a user may be using.

But the competing websites don't suffer?

well wouldn't you be more inclined to go to one of those O-zone sites over a competing site? The competing site would suffer from losing you as a user / potential revenue source.

The internet should be a fair market for everyone

this is on the same sort lines as that Net Neutrality debate

TBH I don't really see many competitors for the sites listed as part of it.

If you're going to TVNZ OnDemand, you're going there to watch a show that they have. You can't visit their competitors site, because they don't have the show you are going to watch.

They aren't hindering performance at all of the other sites.
[quote]
i dunno about that. tvnz.co.nz is a site you go to for Latest news, current events, sports, weather ,etc

there are a lot of competing sites for that out there.
i would be pretty annoyed if i was the site owner for sites like stuff.co.nz or Tv3.co.nz
[quote]
You could be annoyed, like most people that whinge about netneutrality, or just call orcon and go "so, how bout this O Zone?"

Yup, nothing stopping them striking an arrangement with Orcon.

Maybe the fact you would need to have your servers hosted within their network, perhaps? Smile

telecom have done something along the same lines as this with their games realm and other places have charged differently for international bandwidth.

I don't think its such an issue in NZ, in the US and with their ISPs attempts at different charges, neutrality is much more important.

TVNZ is doing the deal with everyone, well ok everyone that has the ability to do it, its not network or content provider exclusive at all.

And what's stopping them from doing that? Nothing? Right.

On top of that, there are ways of doing it for minimal cost. Most major ISP's and commercial hosting providers are peered via either APE or WPE. The major exceptions are Telecom and Telstra, because the MBA types don't see peering as something that is a Good Thing for the Health of the Internet, but as something else they can bill for. For everyone else who has a clue, peering exchange traffic is essentially free. (Not really, but pretty much, essentially the cost of transit)

im not sure what this means. TVNZ is paying multiple ISPs to allow it's users access to their site without using up the user's data allowances?

No, they have content
