hey guys quick question. I've come across many guides on how to optimise XP for DJing but none of them mention whether it's best to have your music files on the same partition as your OS or on a separate one.

I've currently partitioned my hard drive as follows:
1. Win XP 64-bit - streamlined for Serato
2. Windows 7 - everyday use
3. Data

Now should I put the music files that i'll play on the XP partition or on the data one? will there be any difference at all in performance or load times? is it best to keep the OS partition 'clean' and free of data?

I've got a Seagate Momentus 320 Gb 7200 RPM drive.

cheers

Put them on your data one.

You put your data on the second partition but your wont get any preformance gains its just easier to back it up when its kept seperate and if you have to reinstall your OS at any stage you won't need to clear the data partition to do it. You'll need a 2nd drive to increase the speed the data is accessed but if you are playing music files it probably isn't necessary. (we only have trouble across a network)

What PD said - zero performance gain with only a single drive.

If anything separate partitions can decrease performance if the computer has to read/write data on 2 partitions at the same time, especially if they aren't adjacent. Not sure DJing would be too demanding on the HD though really...

Still wouldn't be really noticeable at all as the drive doesn't care about partitions, it's simply reading or writing the sectors it's asked to by the OS - it's entirely possible that it could be reading/writing data from non-contiguous sectors with only a single partition anyway.
