anyone know this works?

I'm in norway and have to take extremely expensive lessons to get a norwegian one, but can drive on a UK license without here having to do anything.

unfortunately, i think that's out of date...

they've changed the rules now, you can drive in the UK on a foreign license, but only for 12 months... you can't exchange, you have to do the test, and that's only if you're a resident...

i'm an UK passport holder so should be able to get around the resident thing? Wonder what kind of proof they need..

I just changed mine over. Had to surrender my NZ one to do so, but have it again now after ordering it again from NZ. Might have changed though, Mutants link seems to suggest it? This was 2 years ago

NZ is a designated country, so under Mutant's link, I get:

"You can only exchange your current driving licence for up to five years from when you become resident, provided your licence remains valid. If your licence is lost or stolen you will need to obtain written confirmation of your driving licence from the issuing licensing authority to send with your application."

So yes, it's still the swaparoo if you're a kiwi.

so what entitles you to become a resident ? will a passport cut the mustard? (3000+ pounds to get norwegian license so i'm seriously into this)

When I did it the form didn't ask for proof I was resident. Might be best to just pick a form up from the post office and see what they need.

ah yeah, sorry, i didn't click the 'designated country' box

Shocked that Norwegian licence must be gold plated for that cost!!

I swapped mine in July 06. It was a bit of a hassle having to go to the Wimbledon office in person but I wanted my licence ASAP and didn't want to wait for my app to be sent to Wales for processing.

Yeah, go norway. 90% of that is the cost of practical lessons which are compulsory to get the license. Ice driving, snow driving, ice and snow driving, snow and ice driving, ice driving at night etc etc etc.

A trip to the UK is on the cards now then.

suzy-q: Do you remember the address of the office in wimbledon?

ps: cheers for the help everyone Smile

oooh ice and snow driving!! extreme!!

I just had a look on the net to find the address and this looks like it:

Ground Floor
Connect House
133-137 Alexandra Road
Wimbledon SW19 7JY

It is very close to the Wimbleson tube station, a couple of mins walk.

There's a few other offices but it looks like Wimbledon is the only central London office - look at this link:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Dl1/Directories/UsefulContactsByCategory/MotoringContacts/DG_10012974

I think it was about £4 extra fee for them to process it as an urgent app but it was quick to do, only about 20 mins or so. you just need to get there a bit before they open to beat the rush.

don't forget to double check the ID and photograph requirements before you go!!
