NuBreaks: Saturday 28 Feb at Zen!

“NuBreaks, a night that encourages upcoming DJs to get out of the bedroom and into a bar environment with the goal being to create an environment that would pave the way for the next generation of Breaks DJs.”

This statement reflected the goal and objectives from the weekly Thursday night event that can lay claim to having been one of New Zealand’s longest running midweek club-nights. NuBreaks now moves to a pseudo-monthly affair at Zen, which is fitting as, alongside Fu, Zen is the home of breakbeat in Auckland. Come and show your support for today’s next generation of breaks DJs in a stellar* lineup that also includes jaded old man Page3 as he flogs away at the proverbial quadruped and grumbles about the machinations of the younger generation…

*stel-lar –adjective
1. of or pertaining to the stars; consisting of stars.
2. like a star, as in brilliance, shape, etc.
3. pertaining to a preeminent performer, athlete, etc.

As we now live in an age where imagery and prose for the purpose of marketing events (read flyers and posters; I could have just said that I guess…) is completely fair game for ridicule, I would like to highlight the word “stellar”. In the dictionary autopsy above we are, for this event, putting the emphasis on the noun athlete.

In a clubland that is at this moment dominated by events that promise vast quantities of cheap alcohol, the best DJ lineups, the biggest production, the largest sound-systems in the world and come with some sort of prepubescent gimmick, we promise the following:

“We have not mere DJs, but athletes, performing as the ancient Greeks did. We promise the hoard cold beverages, rippling muscular physiques and enough bottom-end to dispatch both lions and Christians in a fashion that would make jealous the ancient Romans.”
