NRL/AFL/Super 12 player behaviour woes

NRL and AFL are both facing a barrage of bad media over the past month or two. Mainly to do with player behaviour, but now the bulldogs supporters as well. Super 12 players got one or two brief mentions that have generally been overshadowed by far more debaucherous behaviour from the other codes.

What sort of coverage is this getting in NZ? Whats the general attitude to it? what can be done?

Frankly Charlie it's not really getting pushed as hard over here. When I was over your side it was on the news / news updates all the time. When I got back, it's just featured in the occasional news report.


I think that these guys can't carry over the testosterone macho crap once they get off the field. I think though that what has occured has shown to the other teams out there.. It's not going to be easy to get away with anymore.

Media coverage here is mainly centered around the ever-controverisal Canterbury Bulldogs side, with last year's salary cap woes and subsequent withdrawal from the competition, the group rape incident, and now the threat of losing competition points due to munter Bulldogs fans scrapping outside matches.

No, it aint going to be an easy road down from here. The manager, or CEO, (sorry can't remember) has already resigned, taking the easy backdoor exit it seems. Several of the Bulldogs players are facing charges, and sponsorship deals are heading down the gutter, no surprises there really - why would you want your product or sevice associated with that kinda of behaviour?

I only know this much because i am interested in the topic. From memory, the salary cap fiasco featured more prominently in mainstream media than the sex scandal (obviously news is prioritised depending on what else is going on etc..)

It's a shame, I always liked the Bulldogs, but not anymore. The general consensus amongst my mates is that they're a bunch of fuckwits and i can't wait to see our boys fucken smash them on the field.

They have always been one of those NRL teams with considerable ties to the NZ talent pool, and i believe they are scheduled to play their 'home games' against the warriors in christchurch, as they did the last 2 years.....

Bring it on.

Its sex, drugs, brawling, group sex, rape.... anywhere and everywhere it seems.

Every day there seems to be ANOTHER case of a woman lodging a complaint.

And the bulldogs CEO (or whatever) was voted out by the board, at a meeting his brother (also on the board) wasn't invited to attend.

There's alot of talk of player education and so on, but really, how hard is it? "don't try to fuck a girl you're mates just finished with, its not your right" etc.

Like I commented last time this was discussed, I guess the guys are only the second generation in their family to walk upright, so maybe not be so hard on them....? (Idiots.)

Perhaps females will have to be a lof more careful around rugby, league or aussie rules players in future particularly in light of what has happened.

Or just give the death sentence to rapists

yeah. but these aren't your "hunt a chick in a dark alley" type rapes, as much as "lets share that chick that the winger is fucking" or "will she notice if we switch the centre for the prop" and so on. I'm not condoning it, fuck I dislike most footy players, but its quite different to the "held at gunpoint" type rapes (in some ways)

Pfunk women should be careful about getting themselves into risky situations and I think all women will think twice before hooking up with footy players.

Its part of the rediculous machiso culture that has so invaded male behaviour these days.

Magazines like Ralph, FHM, Brass and the other bonehead publications are aimed at what appears to be males perrmanently locked into a pimply 14 year old phase. 14 year old are legally children, so its hard expect people who behave like this to be rounded responsible adults.

Professional sport has taken what would otherwise be societies truck drivers, carpenters, labourers and factiry workers and given them shitloads of money at a very young age then they are told that they are Gods, untouchables, and plugged them AS A GROUP into the arrested development macho culture. And we wonder why these sex attacks occur?????

Its definitely part of some teams culture more than others though. Where the leaders have a more respectful attitude towards women this attitude will be far less likely to happen. Anyone who follows league would be less surprised that its the bulldogs involved than say Roosters or Newcastle, and also that its league not union that is involved.

On a slight tangent, don't you think its pathetic guys that can't talk to women without trying to chat them up. They have no concept of just a normal conversation with the opposite sex. Have seen it a few times lately and, like FB said, its like they are locked into a permanent pubescent stage of life.
