NRL to try 2 referees next season

"The proposal for dual referees is yet to be formally accepted but NRL chief executive David Gallop said the signs were it would go ahead.

"It is something that has been debated many times and there is a strong view that we need to try it and to see if it does in fact lead to the outcomes we all want which is greater consistency and a better flowing game," Gallop said.

The two referees idea would be applied to the premiership only, with one referee to oversee the play-the-ball while another would be based on the 10-metre line."

It seems a little disjointed. No reason not to have both refs with a whistle, IMO.

I'd rather they trialed it for a year in a lesser competition...

They've already trialed it in the Toyota Cup PFunk. Not all games but in quite a few and found it kept the game flowing at a good rate.

Two refs with two whistles could get a bit muddy I reckon. What if they both blow at the same time? Best to have one report to the other to keep it clean.

I think it is a good idea. Anything that lessens the impact the Video Ref has on the game the better in my eyes.

Agree with the 2 whistle thing...could get confusing. Having the man on the 1 metre line holding the whistle sounds like a goer to me

Could divide the field like they do in netball

Men are capable of running the full dimension of the playing area, so they don't need to divide field.

We do only have one set of eyes each though, hence the two refs.

Don't really see the point for League.

Faaaaar more important to get this introduced into Union (Steve Hansen has been pushing for it).

I agree Grinder... need to have one ref on either side of the scrum... the calls are just a lottery too much of the time.

I do. Far too many contentious calls in the play the ball area that go the wrong way. The video ref checking them was a good answer but it slowed the play down too much so this way it'll be far faster.

The speed of the game is league's strength over rugby. It should do all it can to maintain this advantage.

So what exactly are the touch judges for? They don't seem to get to call anything? They're kinda like moving markers for where the ball is to be thrown in.

For me the most contentious area in league where bad calls are made (because good calls are hard to make) is the stripping of the ball by defenders

One ref constantly hovering over the tackled ball /defensive line might help..... might not, Im kind of on the fence with this one

Harringon would never have put up with another whistler, great refs relish the control factor
