In the NRL you don't have to use your arms

However, tacklers continually shoulder charge high, which is usually ineffective

Shoulder - or even entire body charging - at the knee level is likely to be more effective, NFL style. The idea is to use the side of the torso and propel oneself at full tilt at the knees of the opposition.

It will ALWAYS take a guy off his feet, and done consistently, will probably injure him as well.

Manly used this tactic a few years ago to take out the opposition kickers, it's illegal and will get you a long suspension as far as I know.

Grass cutters. Highly illegal, and rightly so.

I always used to wonder at rugby/league training what the fuck was the point in "tackle bags" As sprinting then diving full leangth low at the tackle bags was what the coach would bellow at you to do. (And is pretty much the idea you are advocating as far as I can tell). Yet you like literally never attempted to effect a tackle like that on an actual person

And the reason you dont do it vadz, is its an extremely homicidal AND suicidal thing to do. Can you imagine the impact that occurs with two people sprinting and colliding in that manner? How much rugby have you actually played anyway Razz

Grasscutter is a good low legs and all tackle. Nothing like the illegal monstrosity that Vads is proposing...

A good grasscutter is something to admire! Dallas Johnson and Micheal Luck are great exponents of it.

Can you explain though? You don't have to use your arms in rugby league - or is that only for tackles above a certain point?

This will propel a player over horizontal, which is illegal... a shoulder to the chest will just put em on the ground.

I've always known grass cutters as tackles deliberately aimed at hurting the legs of the opposition. Not just your standard 'bootlace' type tackle.

Hmmm, interesting... I've always known it as a good low tackle. A quick google search doesn't give me much to work with in finding a definitive definition though...

I think of grasscutters as diving at the legs/feet of the ball-carrier with your shoulder.

I didn't think that was actually illegal though... saw it quite a few times watching my school league team Confused

I remember a few years ago Manly players would dive into the knee of the kicker's planted leg with their shoulders as he was kicking it rather than going for the charge down... It only lasted one game before referees were instructed to crack down on it heavily... Not sure what the rule is when the player isn't kicking the ball though.

Yeah I remember my rugby team tried it a few times at school also. That was over 10 years ago for me though, and I suspect around that for you too gb?

Yeah that's about right Razz

Bradley Clyde was always the best "grasscutter" specialist when I was growing up. I always tried to emulate him. I was an unashamed young fan of the Green Machine...

Bradley Clyde

I saw him play in an Aussie schoolboys team way back when. A couple of schoolmates of mine were in the NZ team and Clyde pretty much destroyed the kiwi boys on his own.

2 years later I see him win the 89 Grand Final.

Sheeeeit.
