Far from the best in the business these days. They've only kept him on this long as a token gesture for such a long and fantastic tenure. He now takes a back seat and really only sits there stating the obvious, offering little in opinion or genuine observation.

Richie Benaud has still got it though, granted he doesn't spend much time in the box anymore, unfortunately cos that means we have to put up with Healy and Taylor more often, but when he does, he's till as sharp as a tack. He made some startling comments during the recent Hadlee-Chappell series and put some of the one eyed crackers in the box next to him to shame. His reading of players techniques is still second to none and he is probably the most unbiased out of all the channel 9 commentators.

I like tony grieg cause he at least provides a little balance. The rest suck far far far too much aussie cock (note, this doesn't mean tony grieg doesn't suck aussie cock too).

Bill Lawry is the most entertaining by a country mile -- he gives me mad lulz, and he's not on the Aussie cock to the extent that everyone seems to think he is

Heh. To be fair, I'm not sure he wrote it, but it was in one of the sporting editorials in the Herald.

Yeah, remember though that Nicholas wouldn't be around in Aus for long if he was too critical of the aussies... Remember when Hadlee got told he was never allowed back because he complained when Dean Jones was used as a runner? (I'm sure there were other reasons too, but that was the public one). If you say the wrong thing, you could be kicked out... (which is ironic really, considering - other than maybe Beanaud - Hadlee was a better player than any of that lot.

I always liked Nicholas's commentary in the England matches, altho he doesn't do Sky which has all the cricket now... but I have lost a bit of respect of him for selling out to the Aussies

Strongly disagree that Mark Nicholas smokes too much Australian pole. If anything he has a tendency to overhype or be overly positive about almost everyone that plays international cricket. He does use the word 'wonderful' a lot.

The one good thing that the Australian commentators have going these days is how much they rip shit out of each other as former players and current commentators. They especially rip Bill Lawry- which is superb because he clearly doesn't know how to take it. They hassle him for being so pro-Melbourne, his pidgeons, his excessive hyperbole etc etc, and he just backs it up with more of what they're hassling him about.

I'm not a Slater fan, but he's especially good at this.
