New Zealand hip hop sit the fuck down

Why does everyone make such a fuss about NZ hip hop? Scribe is one of the most attrocious MCs i've ever had the misfortune to hear - P Money made a SERIOUS error of judgement on that one. Ill Semantics and Dubious Brothers are equally mediocre. Don't get me started on the fuckin Fast Crew. Nesian Mystik? I don't think i'd bother to include them in any debate about hip hop. Mareko is the only New Zealand MC who could realistically compete on an international scale. The rest just sound like amateurs. The NZ music scene is so quick to promote its local talent that it sometimes overlooks the fact that a lot of it is, well, crap. Why should I support NZ hip hop for the sake of it, when i could be makin American rappers even richer, and actually get to listen to some decent shit

Dei Hamo & Mareko definitely have that american sound/quality. Thats what makes good hip hop - cause thats where it began.

Personally I prefer the smoother more 'intelligent stuff' like J5, BEP, Blackalicious, Quannum etc.

But you just cannot beat NWA. Might as well give up now.

scribe does deserve slightly better comments however hes no where near as good as everyone makes out he is.
Mareko is the king of AK at the present time no doubt.

however, the point youve missed is that nz has an abudunce of new artists coming through (the likes of con psy, 41 30, the R.E.S and so on.).

i grew up listening to Urban Disturbance, Upper Hutt Posse & Dam Native - hip hop back then was at a fledgling stage and even then peeps werent confident of NZ's music capabilities ... in order to flourish, we must encourage!

I can sort of agree with you Jamus, I can't honestly say theres huge amounts of Nz hiphop I enjoy listening to. I like scribe and mareko/decepticonz, but beyond that theres not much I'm into.

At the same time I think you should be more supportive of the local hiphop scene - you sound like you want a carbon copy of US hiphop from local rappers, whats the point of that? It will take time and support for the NZ hiphop scene to develop a distinctive sound that is different from the US, but still good hiphop.., I think things are definitely improving
