In a recent Ministry Mag - James Holden was quoted as saying that his latest remix would be "the end of an era as Prog is on its last legs."
Was he kidding? Did he mean that Prog as we (kind of) know it is over? Do we take him literally and look forward to Jimmy Van M dropping Barthezz "On The Move" in the future?

Please discuss.

I heard that Boy George is playing prog now....
[quote]
woo hoo a new topic, big ups to astral
[quote]
i think prog is just starting to mature, and
"spread its wings" there seems to be alot more
to it now, so more sub genres, eg prog house,
prog trance, dark prog and so on, what is just
prog?
[quote]
prog drum and bass

Prog Hip hop

Prog N'Sync
[quote]
Deep Dish remix of NSYNC on the Jimmy Neutron soundtrack - nice.
[quote]
sorry for getting to deep for ya damien
[quote]
I think prog is a bit experimental....and I like it....

Deep dish remixed NSync>?

well I never.

I havent been listening to "electronica" music for that long ... and I still find some genre definition a lilbit confusing
am slowly sussing it though ... I think ..
so yeah .. what is just prog? any examples?

james holden wants to see it go a bit more trance oriented if you ask me...his essential mix was definitely on the deeper, trancy side, and I think it's all good...I'd love to see more tracks around now that were the same style as were floating about from 97-99...space manoevers, earlier sander k stuff, kinda style that's on sasha's ibiza gu...bit of funk in 'em...
[quote]
Yeah, bring on the funk!

prog not dead just evolving
[quote]
I've always thought that prog isn't so much a genre as an adjective. Progressive describes the property of pushing forward, finding new sounds, not resorting to tired cliches and formulas, essentially, making music that goes somewhere (as in progress)...

But when James holden says "prog is on its last legs" what he's really saying is that the contemporary 'prog' sound-of-the-moment(as thrashed by the ever-ready-to-exploit-something-new press, and played by people like him, Sasha, etc) is becoming tired. I totally agree! Music becomes tired, genres come & go (case in point speed-garage, haha)... There's only so many times you can listen to the recombination of elements that make up a so-called 'prog' track before you start to want for something new. I happen to know that one can just go out and purchase a sample CD called "progressive house construction kit" or "the sound of prog" or any number of other ones and all of a sudden have at their disposal the exact same range of sounds that James Holden does... but when they make a track using these, to me, it isn't progress... its following a formula and rehashing a sound. Why the hell bother?! Find something new, go with it, create a new sound and push forward... I'm sure thats what he will do!

well said
so simple when put like that
the nature of it

I heard that Jolyon is also now playing prog, just like Boy George. Isnt it also about time OB1 started playing prog like he say he does instead of one or two prog tracks in a night of trance cheddar?
[quote]
James Holden uses buzz...you can d/l it for free. I think it's a bit more than putting samples together, it's how you use what you have.

Technology is evolving...so are the sounds people can make, and so we'll continue to hear more and more new things

This thread makes me proud to be associated with the Progressive forum.
Bless you all.

I heard P money plays prog.......

just cos its the in thing to do....

I find it funny, when Steve lawler etc come to
town, the gig will pack out.....people jump on the
bandwagon.."oooo I luv prog, I luv Sasha..oooo"
but as soon as the gig is over, they will head
back to Kiss bar, and juggle glowsticks and eat
chupa chups, instead of supporting a local prog
night.....

what to do about that then?
[quote]
Prog aint gana die

heck i only just found out about it last year and i farking love it.

its just hard to track down the sounds down here in the deep south. it has a good following down here also i think.
[quote]
go to Hybrid in chch...see pyre.
[quote]
in the true sense - prog will never die as its not
a style of music but a style of putting tunes
together - ie a progressive mix - progressing
through the journey -
whats killing "prog" is a good progressive DJ
plays a tune everyone (so called prog DJs) goes
ooooh thats pretty cool then they (the so called
prog DJs) string together another 20 tunes that
sound exactly the same - thus being a very
unprogressive journey - in fact mighty boring
IMHO

thats my 2c
[quote]
I heard P money scratching it up a bit the other day as he beat juggled back and forth from sono - control to drink to get drunk...the homies were going off big time
[quote]
na holden and all those boys just want to keep the sound to themselves.

progressive has taken off WW now doubt about it. problem is that it is the new sound and it has been bagged in all of the UK mags.

for fucks sake hard house is boring and it hasn't evolved one bit. I used to play it all 7 years ago and all the tunes i used to play are on there 8th remix already and still being banged out today.

progressive wont die, thats like saying electronica will die.

as long as there are people to play to, people who are buying the music, it will never die.

the scene where you are may die but somewhere on this planet right now someone is listening to some progressive beatz. FACT!
[quote]
Fully pyre.....

how is my sister?

Prog will go on and on......but in AK47, certain
people who brand themselves as prog are
putting across the wrong message to the
kiddies...

U should hear what they think prog is in Ozzie at
most of the Prog bars.......hard house on -7 on
the pitch control......disturbing.
[quote]
ok damien u lost me there argh i dont get dj talk but i still like prog ok.
[quote]
sorry forest.....

clearer meaning is
Some Dj's have been known to put the word
"Progressive" by their desciption, because they
hear its the next big thing, and want to be seen
as cutting edge.
So, I got suckered in thinking rad, I will check out
a night of prog....and all I got was slowed down
cheesy trance with one or 2 progs tunes thrown
in....the whole set was a mish mash of hard
house and tripe....no "progression" thru the set...

Forest..glad to hear u like prog.....check out
hybrid in CHCH, say hi to Pyre....buy him a shot
of tequila and he will take u out to dinner.

Just got bought James Holden "Soltice" ahhhhhhh.....
