New computer lab will help trace child porn

17.10.2002

A new computer laboratory was opened today to help the unit that tracks down illegal pornography on the internet.

Internal Affairs Minister George Hawkins said the Wellington laboratory had state of the art computer equipment which would be used by the Censorship Compliance Unit to find child pornography and trace the people trading in it....

Makes you think how easy it must be to set computers up to pick up key words in things like txt messages... Can be used for numerous crimes such as drugs etc. Ever wonder what those two white domes down south are for...???

Never wondered because I always knew. Truth is more interesting than fiction which often predicts the future. Thank you Mr Orwell.

Fuck working in that lab for a job. It must be pretty horrific finding evidence of child pornography etc.

Just like an anatomist those lab workers would have to be pretty desensitised. It would take a while to build a detachment for analysis and if thrown in the deep end that period would be traumatic.

i wonder how effective these labs are, youd think that if they have the ability to catch ppl trading child porn then they would also be able to track ppl trading mass amounts of pirated music, video and all sorts of other things.

Hey Frazzle - will you be heading down for the Waihopai protesting hippy action in early Jan' then?

...you get to sleep in a feild...

It's not really a concern of Governments to track down illegal trading in music etc - thats the music industries problem. I'm pleased that more resources are being introduced to track kiddie porn, and I'm glad that Mr. Hawkins is willing to admit that the NZ government has absoloutly no control over the various spy bases in New Zealand - because they are in the best position to keep tabs on that sort of thing by far - I guess Eschelon is busy "Protecting" us in other ways or something.

Not that I endorse child porn or anything.

These spy networks power is overrated. You can scan and process all the emails/txts/phone calls you like but at the end of the day someone has to read them and decide if they mean anything.

I think the GCSB hires around 200 people i think of which maybe 100 would be sorting throught the info. They got little chance to find anything unless they already have a lead ie sensitive business deal.

Human intelligence is soo much more important as an aside the whole US intel system has not one cuban spy let alone an arab. The russians still prolly have the best intel.

As for catching pirated music trading thats half the people who use the net.

I suppose you have insider knowledge then Ja?

The massive processing power that these organisations have isn't dedicated to incercepting the information, it will be dedicated to sorting it and assessing. If they want to keep tabs on someone in particular, incercepting all of their electronic communications, they can.
