20 houses proposed plus boatramp and boatshed on northside

public submissions cutoff is tomorrow

[quote]
What the FUCK!

This is one of the most beautiful beaches in NZ
[quote]
lloking at pics on fb page it looks like some development has already taken place on the north side
[quote]
The thing is so few people know what this beach is like it will be easy for asswipes to move in and buy the fucking place
[quote]

New Chums Beach was nominated as one of the top 20 beaches in the world by Observer UK 2006:
· White sandy crescent shaped beach with turquoise water and bush down to the beach.
· The beach is an unspoiled paradise.
· There are no signs of development or civilization

The proposal:
· A 20 lot housing subdivision, 12 lots alongside New Chums beach and the remainder at the north end of Whangapoua beach
· Five lots which will be viewable from the northern end of New Chums beach (lots 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8 ).
· An access track at the northern end of New Chums will allow the launching of small boats.
· A boatshed will be constructed beside the access track to house small boats (subject to resource consent approval).

I have submitted and emailed to a tonne of peeps. I hope this doesnt go ahead. Its too beautiful a place to be ruined by rich mans houses, 4wheel drives that have never seen dirt and boats!
[quote]
Love this beach, family has a house at Whangapoua. Will be a crying shame if this all goes ahead!
[quote]
That's money/power for you I guess. If you've got one, you've got the other and you can just about make anything happen.

Only if we allow it
[quote]
25 posts in the thread about a 75 cent bank fee

Look how much care factor is exercised about developement of a beach rated among the worlds top 20
[quote]
So the we in only if we allow it is easily explained

Apathy

Or failure to see beyond our immediate concerns

Put up a parking lot
[quote]
I put in a submission today objecting to the development... I hope others have too!Sad
[quote]
The problem is Kiwis are fucke uninformed and too apathetic to actually do anything about stuff like this. It's interesting, I heard that the people getting to protest about the mining debarcle was actuallyjust a red herrring as the government never intened to mine there, but wanted people to think via the media that democracy was alive and well in NZ and the government would listen to the public. Apparently, they're gonna be mining down South as had always been the plan.

You'd think if anyone actually felt strongly about this they'd start a FB group, try raise public awareness, co oridinate some media and arrange a protest. How hard would that be if you had the motivation, contacts and skills?

[quote]
have you even read this thread cos that's exactly what they've been doing?

Lack of input does not necessarily mean lack of interest, nor intent.

Yeah, I read that. But how has it actually been publicised? Just via email or via sites like biggie? It was the first I'd heard about it ... and only a couple days out before you could do a final submission to oppose the development. Or has this been circulating around and been known of by a lot of people for quite a while?

Is it even on FB? Just taken into account how many people are on FB now and how it's actuially pretty easy to get a lot of people to look at an issues via this kind of medium, it almost in a forgone conclusion that stuff like this should be up there.

wow Neutral
[quote]
the fb link's in the 2nd post mang and its got its own website as posted in onehappy's

yuo=fail at reading
[quote]
Fail.
[quote]
My bad, yeah missed that.

Well, what can be done from here? Will, what has been suggested make a change? What if it doesn't? Where to from here?

Just about to run out the door, so before anyone says the FB site says it all, I haven;'t hasd a chance to read it yet.
[quote]
when you read it will you comprehend it?
[quote]

Jesus.
[quote]
I had an email from the Minister of Conservation last night thanking me for my submission. I sent it to the Prime Minister too, as well as the council and the developers.

THIS IS HOW YOU GET YOURSELF HEARD, ITCHY!

Actually do something rather than whine on about a bloody Facebook group that most people will join and never look at again. BTW, I cant imagine that the council will look at a group on crackbook and make their decision from there.. So, while its an ok way to alert people, its not what will make the difference.
[quote]
oh btw bobd we've reached the 25 mark
[quote]
New Chums Bay on Closeup on TV tonight

As well as sending a submission i'm also emailing this lot. John Key here is your big chance to earn some Brownie points:

Kate Wilkinson – Minister of Conservation
kate.wilkinson@national.org.nz
Nick Smith – Minister of the Environment
nick.smith@national.org.nz
John Key – Minister of Tourism
john.key@national.org.nz
Jonathan Coleman – Associate Minister of Tourism
jonathan.coleman@national.org.nz
[quote]
Nice, OneHappy, i emailed all of them too. Get amongst and have your say, people!
[quote]
the tcdc email server seems to be bouncing emails to that address given
[quote]
Yeah, that and my emails to the politicians are bouncing too because of failing SPF check, which is know is set right for my domains. Neutral
[quote]
TCDC's fax machine isn't much chop either.
[quote]
TCDC email address working ok now
[quote]
As is the fax. If you're lucky. I covered both bases.
[quote]
Hopefully a last minute deluge because a few days ago only 70 submissions were in
[quote]
Nice one Onehappy. Emailed each person something similar to:

Dear John

I am writing to express my view on the planned development of Chums Beach Coromandel. As this is a beautiful piece of land which is ranked as one of the top 20 beaches in the world (Observer UK, 2006), it would be an absolute travesty if developers were able to destroy this by being allowed to build on it.

As Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism I would hope you would see this as a priority and address this issue.

Regards

Itchy

Just don't tell mum I'm on biggie OK?
[quote]
Got this reply ... might be just a standard responce to anything they get emailed about I guess

Dear Itchy,

On behalf of the Associate Minister of Tourism, Hon Dr Jonathan Coleman, I acknowledge your email of date concerning the proposed development of New Chums Beach.

As the issue you have raised falls within the portfolio responsibilities of the Minister for the Environment, I have forwarded your email on to the office of Hon Dr Nick Smith for his consideration.

Regards,

Claire Shirley | Ministerial Assistant Tourism

Hon John Key - Prime Minister

Hon Dr Jonathan Coleman (Associate Minister)

Executive Wing | Parliament | Wellington 6160

[quote]
I got that response too Itchy, and have posted a question on the group page asking if its legitimate for the Associate Minister of Tourism to declare New Chums irrelevant to his portfolio in this way (well i suppose they make the rules so it probably is).

Meanwhile ...

"The Thames-Coromandel District Council yesterday said it had received 989 submissions by last month's deadline, both for and against the proposal.

But late submissions have also been posted on the council's website, taking the total to about 1300.

About six out of seven are formally marked as opposed to the development."

This is encouraging news.. Ups to all those who spoke up.. Heres hoping the development does not go ahead!
[quote]
if the govt can stump up 1.7 billion of NZ taxpayer's $$ for......then it sure as hell can stump up $30 million for all NZ'ers

610....
[quote]
the 1.7 line will be this govts curse until the election.... ha
[quote]
It's been in the Herald today and on National Radio news.
Signatures on the petition rocketing ahead to 619 now, but still waay toooo few Sad

Oh and i wrote to TDC too, but it's war and you use every weapon you can get your hands on right?
[quote]
then best you be storming the Thames-Coromandel District Council offices.... hope you fare better than the discovery channel man
[quote]
649 now, 30 signatures in 1 hour.

That's what publicity does, it builds momentum, and a petition is one of the means through which it happens. Decision makers then come under pressure, and then there is the possibility of something new happening
[quote]
yep facebook groups and online petitions have changed so much....

whereas if one makes a proper submission things can change - refer to the anti mining submissions (over 42,000 submissions made, for and against)
[quote]
Well as far as i know the closing date for submissions is done and over the horse has bolted

If this petition advances rapidly now, it can create further media attention, and like i say that creates pressure for change
[quote]
929....

nearly 400 in the one day

gathering momentum
[quote]
well I do hope the Thames-Coromandel District Council know about the petition... otherwise its just wasted 0's and 1's
[quote]
petition is for parliament and for principle

your vote is never wasted, though petitions may fall on deaf ears

Particularly in this case as the co-owner of Wainuiototo/ New Chums is none other than George Kerr. Remember him? In the news of late. Something to do with SCF I believe. First in line for the payout.

Big guns join battle to save New Chums beach

quote:
Mr Goff said in his submission that the beach should be passed on undamaged to future generations of New Zealanders.

"It would be an absolute tragedy to lose this rather than regarding it as part of our heritage," he said.

quote:
The proposal for 20 residential units has been put forward by Queenstown developers John Darby and George Kerr.

Mr Kerr's finances have been tied up with the recently bailed-out South Canterbury Finance.

His company Torchlight was repaid $100 million this week using part of a $175 million loan from the taxpayer.
